Trading for Ford and giving him big money with a chronic knee wasn't smart.

Personally, I think it's good value. Even with the chronic knee. This defense is a defense that rotates around the edge rusher. In other defenses, a Dee Ford may not matter so much. Bellicheats defenses don't need that elite edge rusher - they can get buy with good ones, because that defense relies on hybrid players and shifting fronts and deceptive coverages.

The Siefert/Carroll defense is essentially a nickel defense. It *needs* that elite pass rusher for it to operate at top form. It's like the difference between Mullens and Beathard. Mullens can operate kyles offense but BeatHard, when he's in there, the offense bogs down. For this defense, the edge rusher is really critical.

Great edge rushers elevate any defense regardless of scheme. Imo same as qb as you mentioned. Ford was A fantastic pickup.

He would've came back in if the game wasn't already in the bag.

How can you be so sure? (Seriously—did I miss something?)

I read it somewhere last night after the game, but forgot where because I was concerned too since he left the game. He was also laughing it on the sidelines in the 4th quarter so i'd think he wasnt to serious.

Weren't they up by 24? Too bad they didn't take Staley out too.

He left at half time.

Shanahan was asked if Ford didn't come back because they were already up and he said no, they weren't up by that much at that point and it didn't have anything to do with it.

Yeah I thought I heard the same thing. Our dline was dominating no matter who was in so I don't think the 9ers felt they needed to risk it. He came out cause it was a little sore but I thought I heard if they still needed him he could have gone back in.

There are certain defenses that don't use edge rushers specifically to man that all important position. For example certain bend but don't break defenses - here they go with a lot of zone blitzing and wait until they get backed up in the red zone to unleash their blitzes. Certain other defenses focus on yardage prevention and hence focuse on stopping the run game, and require a very strong middle and good fast LB's to make run offenses go sideways and spill them to the side lines. The third kind of defense are the field position defenses - and those rely on excellent DB's and great LB's and not necessarily the most athletic DLinemen to work. Tuna's defenses were like that - before he had Lawrence Taylor. Those three *types* of defenses don't really need an elite edge rusher to operate their defenses.

Agree, of course, that *if* you do have an elite edge rusher, it makes any defense better, but again, certain defenses - by design - don't need them as much as this defense does.

When we're 2-0 and you're saying this you're just trying wayyyyyyy too hard. Gotta tone it down a little more if you still wanna come off somewhat believable

Well I'm glad they replaced incompetent with amature.
Last week everyone was raving about him. Now he's a big mistake? What a bunch of fickle fans.
