The way Paraag does contracts, it does benefit the Niners. It can also benefit the player. If I'm a player I want my lump sum of the contract up front too. Anything can happen in football wether it's an injury or you just continue to ball out and receive another front loaded contract.
Agree. Front loaded contracts better reflect the reality that NFL careers are very short and an injury can end it in an eye blink. Also less cap hit in the future frees up cap space for cap flexibility.
Having said that, if your roster is loaded with talent, the cap forces you to get rid of your most expensive. That means constant development of new talent, which gives coaches like Kyle - who can develop undrafted talent (at least on offense) a huge edge.
I think if I'm Praag, I'd just allocate a fixed cap percentage to QB and Edge Rusher, and the rest can be changed depending on who is shining in a given year. Or maybe they have a targeted allocation of cap percentages relative to the positions, like QB being the most expensive and Edge rusher being 2nd most expensive, etc...
Shwrmans take on player movement is going to make the negotiations for a new CBA **very difficult** I predict another player hold out like 2011.
