You're probably right but they needed to save money to get under the cap. Cutting him would have cost more.
I cant believe it. We have to keep this bum? We cant get rid of him june 1 now? This is crazy. HE CANT PLAY FOOTBALL ANYMORE. HE WILL HURT HIS BACK AND SPEND THE REST OF HIS DAYS IN A WHEELCHAIR. WE NEED 53 PLAYERS EVERY WEEK TO COMPETE. PLEASE MR JOHN LYNCH: FIND A SOLUTION WHERE WE KEEP THE CAP SAVINGS,DEE FORD WALKS, AND WE PLAY EACH GAME WITH 53 PLAYERS AVAILABLE.

thank you.
I like most fans get frustrated with the 49ers patience with injured players however, I believe that is by strategy. A: a player like Verrett will continue to resign with us for cheap and IF he ever puts ot together healthwise he will continue to have that gratification, same can be said for Ford, who's restructured several times now. B: I think it looks good to FA's where most the NFL is a "We released Bobby Wagner today without notification, we let the news tell him" dog eat dog business where players are discarded without pause when they are no longer performing, the 49ers are by far one of the more patient teams when it comes to injuries and in a sport where the collisions and the contact is so violent, I am sure that the injured players appreciate that.

Dee may never be a major contributor again, but he may be and if he is he'll be playing on a team that he really enjoys playing for and players with that mindset always play harder. It helps create a family-type environment with the 49ers. We had it under Eddie D and Jed is now creating the same culture, but how he's able to in 2022. I prefer my team to give a s**t about these guys than just tossem when their time is done. I've done my own complaining about Dee, but my outlook has changed and Im proud of the 49ers for keeping him on to really try to get him healthy and playing football again. Same for Verrett.

We should have never traded for him.

We should have never given him a big contract.

We should have never restructured a couple years ago instead of cutting him.

Hopefully it's a lesson well learned by this front office. I believe (in hindsight) they got taken to the cleaners by Fat Andy. Medical issues since then have plagued the 49ers. This is going to be a valuable experience for ShanaLynch going forward with regards to medical issues in general.

4.96M is a good savings but we just keep pushing the $ back. Too bad this didn't come a day earlier. It may have let us resign DJ Jones.

No, there was no savings. It would cost $2.5M to cut him. The only option was to extend.

He's like that baseball player who retired 20 years ago who's still getting paid. Although Ford is taking up a valuable roster spot. Fans don't realize this but Dee Ford is 63 years old.

I think the lesson is this- why were they willing to trade an elite edge rusher? At the time the trade seemed good so I won't say we never should've traded for him but the lesson is teams don't just give away prime pass rushers. Our situation at edge at the time was desperate and the Chiefs took advantage.

Bigger mistake- Pettis over Landry in 2018 lol.

The one positive is that we saw with Dee Ford lack of snaps is not an excuse for lack of productivity. For as little as he plays,he does effect the game. And his presence ended the debate for me once and for all about Solomon Thomas being a bust. Every Dlineman ate in 2019 except him.

We don't know the details of the restructure yet, but restructuring someone who won't play is not a good thing regardless of cap saving this year. I don't know much about cap like AB does, but he has a 2.4M base salary this year, so unless he took a paycut like AB thinks, 9ers loose additonal 2.4M in combined cap space (this year + next year). They could easily restructure other players who will be here long term like Kittle, Trent, Warner to get under the cap and not loose additional future cap space.

For instance: (These are not accurate numbers, just an example to show how 9ers could loose 2.4M more, just from restructure)

Dee Ford cap numbers (if cut after June 1st) is : ~9.5M (2022) and ~5M (2023) (according to over the cap). If he didn't take paycut on his base salary of 2.4M, with restructure of let's say to save 4M this year, his cap will be : 9.5 - 4 = 5.5 (2022), 5M + 4M + 2.4M = 11.4M (2023). 49ers just added a huge debt of 11.4M to next year instead of 5M originally (and loose 2.4M that could have gone to someone else). Again, not accurate numbers, just showing a simple example.

It would have cost KC more to keep him for the future. So, they got draft picks and cap room, which they gave to Frank Clark. Ford's injury history may have played a part but he was coming off a very productive season. Let's hope he has one this year.

No issue trading for a pass rusher just not one with chronic knee problems. It wasn't a secret that his knees were f**ked. Niners just rolled the dice anyway. Then came the re structure and the back issues. .

There are a lot of things we can nitpick about when it comes to our braintrust... but the one glaring issue I see is the injuries. I don't know if it's just the medical staff evaluating improperly, the front office ignoring medical concerns, poor strength/conditioning programs, and/or simply bad luck... but injuries seem to have been an achilles heel for this regime.

We had a healthier 2021 than 2020 though, so hopefully our injury problems are behind us... but yeesh. It's so bad, and Dee Ford is the poster boy of how injuries can really hamper a talented team.

Personally, I think Kocurek has a big say in the DLine in general and Dee Ford in particular. If I was the 49ers, I'd do everything to keep Kocureck - and his genius in turning defensive line lemons into lemonade. If I was ShanaLynch, It would be well worth throwing a bone to Kocureck and keeping Dee Ford, just to keep Kocureck. I think he's that valuable to this organization. He is the Bobb McKittrick of the DLine and without him, I don't know if we even smell the NFC Championship games in 2019 and 2021.
