I think if 49ers cut him after june 1st, they save 2.4M (his base salary) for this year and didn't increase any more additional cap number to his 2023 number.

Before restructure:
His cap (if keep): 11.9M (2022) + 4.9 M (2023)
if cut before June 1st: 14.4M (2022) (loose 2.5M cap space this year, but next year 0 hit)
if cut after June 1st: 9.5 (2022) + 4.9 M (2023)... save 2.4M this year which is his base salary.
Relax. We save money today and it sounds like they added voidable years on his contract to get out of it easier in the future.

The Niners front office did this as a cost savings not because they expect him to start or even play much. They understand how it affects them way better than any of us. Tye know all the details.

Voidable years doesn't mean you avoid paying in the future, it is just to make the cap number for current year lower. And in Dee Ford case, since he has no more years left on his contract, it means you pay much larger amount next year (unless they extend him with another contract, which i doubt).

I like most fans get frustrated with the 49ers patience with injured players however, I believe that is by strategy. A: a player like Verrett will continue to resign with us for cheap and IF he ever puts ot together healthwise he will continue to have that gratification, same can be said for Ford, who's restructured several times now. B: I think it looks good to FA's where most the NFL is a "We released Bobby Wagner today without notification, we let the news tell him" dog eat dog business where players are discarded without pause when they are no longer performing, the 49ers are by far one of the more patient teams when it comes to injuries and in a sport where the collisions and the contact is so violent, I am sure that the injured players appreciate that.

Dee may never be a major contributor again, but he may be and if he is he'll be playing on a team that he really enjoys playing for and players with that mindset always play harder. It helps create a family-type environment with the 49ers. We had it under Eddie D and Jed is now creating the same culture, but how he's able to in 2022. I prefer my team to give a s**t about these guys than just tossem when their time is done. I've done my own complaining about Dee, but my outlook has changed and Im proud of the 49ers for keeping him on to really try to get him healthy and playing football again. Same for Verrett.

I agree with much of this but with Eddie it was business, the team, and a winning culture. Jeff Fuller was permanently injured, he was drafted by the team and Eddie took care of him for life. But even greats Ronnie Lott, and Joe Montana passed their prime and he respectfully had to let them move on to other teams.

Rosters are limited and each spot is needed to fill a championship team. Former stars cost big money based on previous achievements and teams like the former 49ers and current Patriots know when to move on.

But Fords previous restructure took him out of that category of being an old star making huge money, this most recent restructure even more so I'm sure. He just turned 30, it's not like Ford is an old wiley vet who's just lost that ability. He has the ability still he just can't stay healthy enough to do it. Montana was old and we had something as good if not better waiting in the wings, who do we have to replace Ford?
This man just continues to give back. What a guy.

Was it a restructure or a pay cut, like AB tweeted?
Is he going to play?

well alright I guess. But to me, there's a fine line between being an a*****e to a 10 year proven vet like Bobby, and wasting time on injury prone guys like Jalen Hurd for like 3 or 4 years.

Hurd cost them very little to keep around on his rookie deal.
