He was a 6th rounder, not a 2nd. very possible for a UDFA to be better than a late round pick.

For another team to claim him off waivers in the next 24 hours, they would have to add him to their 53 man roster. If he clears waivers we can sign him to our PS.
There is risk involved but they needed a roster spot and there was not a whole lot of choice. Who do you cut if not Smith? CJB was not going to be an option, they clearly are trying to hold onto him.

He will clear waivers and can sit on the practice squad for a while. Time is on his side.

hope so too, but if I was the 49ers personnel manager, I'd take the opportunity to see if there are *other* eligible TE's for the practice squad that *may* be better than Kaden that are out there in Undrafted land. Unlikely, I know, but it's a possibility.
