Since Brunskil can play G, and certainly there is some upside there, I do not see us drafting an OL until the 5th round, and I thought this was our biggest need. If a really good tackle is available still when we pick in the first, that is more insurance that the running game will continue to flourish and especially Jimmy will be upright, so I would welcome such a pick.

This guy is such a perfect fit in Kyle's scheme. He's a keeper and is a great versatile backup who can start

How effin cool is it to have two backup tackles, replace two great tackles, and have little to no drop-off?
Man I love this team.
I loved the 2011-2013 teams but they were nowhere near as fun to watch. This has a 1994 feel to it, especially with the jerseys yesterday.

Agreed. It is amazing. I would never had thought that both Skule and Brunskill would be able to step in and play as well as they have. These two players do not get enough credit!

I don't think that is accurate.
The 49ers have the 23rd best pass blocking line, and Jimmy G has the second worst Time to Throw in the NFL.
Its fair to give Credit to Shanny 2.0 and Jimmy G for making it work, but they absolutely need their starting Tackles back.

I didn't realize that, I am not a big stats guy so didn't check.
Good point, look forward to them being back regardless! How effin cool to think how effin awesome they will be with them back then!!

I think your right in thinking these guys have a place in the NFL, they will get better with time in the system.

The character of Johnny Appleseed was based on Brunskill – except for the apple tree planting and not raping men.
Third highest PFF rating against the fourth best defense in the league!

Doing great in the run game, but JG is hiding a lot of deficiencies in the passing game blocking.

Our backup tackles blew up holes so large yesterday that I could have run through them. 232 rushing yards. Thats TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY TWO.
Who needs to pass block if you score a touchdown on every fourth rushing attempt?

I thought Skule was doing pretty darn good. But I haven't heard Brunskill's name mentioned once in the games he's started.
That's usually a sign that he's doing pretty good.

I posted this in the OL thread:
PFF just updated their ratings. Brunskill now has a 75 rating which puts him in the #11 spot overall.
I don't know all about the matrix that PFF uses to create these ratings, however, I do know that they base them on what the player should be expected to do in a given situation. Hence, the player would get a lower grade if he requires help from another player to handle the situation. As to the scheme, PFF still requires the player to execute what is expected.
For the record, Skule is at 68 for #25 overall. Both of them are rated higher than the three interior OL.
EDIT: PP ratings for the current starting five:
Brunskill - 79
Richburg - 78
Tomlinson - 74
Skule - 54
Person - 48.
Again, these are cumulative grades for the season.

I did a fast analysis on data available on PFR, and Jimmy G is blitzed at the highest rate in the league (at 36.3%). Probably due to Skule/Brunskill being in the lineup.

So we need one better guard.

One more nugget Dan Brunskill shared with me yesterday: When 49ers signed him, he said it was different than the usual uneventful signing of an unknown player. "They were just so excited for me. It really made me feel that I was part of something."
