A 3rd and 4th for a 32 year old WR.
Look, I trust Shanny and Lynch. They have done a really good job building this roster into a playoff caliber team. But that was too much to cough up for a 32 year old WR likely on a one year rental, maybe a one or two year extension.
I don't care what anyone says, this was a desperation move, a desperation move brought on by the inconsistent play at the WR position. In particular, this is a serious indictment on one healthy Dante Pettis. I am on record as not wanting to draft him, wasn't particularly happy when we drafted him, and I was out on Pettis long before this trade.
Now, don't get me wrong, I really like Emmanuel Sanders. And I fully expect him to have an immediate impact. This team was already a playoff team without him. With him we have a legit SB chance. With the murderous row portion of our schedule still to come a consistent WR to balance Shanny's offense so teams will pay dearly for doubling Kittle.
But make no mistake about it, this is NOT a future move, it's a move for THIS year. He's in the last year of his deal, and at 32 coming off a major injury I cannot see us resigning him to a multi-year deal. For me, the fact that we had to give up future draft picks for a 32 year old WR coming off major injury speaks volumes about Pettis. And this is what bothers me about this trade.

Also, how is the guys contract?
Our nucleus is signed for the near future and we're in the driver's seat for the playoffs. We're definitely in win now mode. Head coaches and GM's don't get 4+ years of building a roster any more because 9/10 of the players there year 1 will be gone in 4 years.

Sanu:

Sanders as of right now has been by far the more productive player with far lesser QBs throwing to him. He may be a couple years older than Sanu, and may lack Sanu's height, but you can argue he's the better player, and we gave up less than Sanu cost the Patriots. So... Yeah.
Honestly, the more I look at this, the more I'm OK with it. We need to consider the following:
1. Goodwin, Deebo, Hurd, and Taylor are all hurting right now. The latter two are on IR. Matthews is about to be cut.
2. Sanders is a proven receiver who has consistently had better seasons than any other current WR on our roster.
3. With two staring OTs out, the QB will benefit greatly from another receiver who can get open fast.
4. If he leaves in the off-season, guess what!? *gasp* We'll get a comp pick for him. Likely a fourth.
5. We can always trade down in the draft. Plus, we always do great late in the draft and with UDFAs. We currently hold a 1st, 5th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round pick.

You think they gave up extra comp just for the heck of it? That was the going rate after Sanu went for a 2nd.
Not only do they add Sanders, they kept him away from other NFC competitors such as Carolina, New Orleans and Green Bay.
Yup. John Lynch better get on his knees for John Elway because we just cock blocked those other teams

Outside of Goodwin, the WR group don't have someone of Sanders caliber to learn from. Like this trade a lot.

This equates to nearly a late 3rd for Sanders. There won't be much of a difference between our 4th and their 5th. We're only moving back maybe 10 spots there.
If Sanders can stay healthy then is a solid pick. Our WR Corps has been awful. Shanahan prioritizes separation with his WRs and we're just not getting it right now. Petrie has been mediocre at best this season. Deebo has flashed and Borne has been his usually inconsistent self. JG needs a reliable receiver and Sanders fits the scheme very well. He can uncover quickly underneath and he can stretch the field.
If Taylor were healthy or if Pettis had showed improvement this move probably isn't necessary. For a team 6-0 and having a real shot at making it deep into the playoffs, this is a bold move.
The downside is that we're giving up a late 3rd to rent a player for the remainder of the season. I expect that he'll quickly get extended if he shows some consistency on Sundays. We have a young WR group. Bringing in a proven vet should benefit the entire bunch.

The idea that Sanders will get a 3rd round comp pick back isn't reasonable. He'd have to sign a fat deal to get SF a 3rd round comp back in addition to SF losing more free agents than they sign. He's not signing a fat contract after this season.

Don't see Pettis being traded.
Agree on the rest just not Thomas now, we should not deplete our DLine, trade him in 2020.
How hard is it going to be on our salary cap after this trade?

Late 3rd+a late 4th for an early 5th and a high quality veteran receiver.
The 4th and 5th might be like 10 picks apart. So really they gave up a late 3rd to try and go in on making the playoffs and winning in the playoffs with a proven playmaker.

People really need to understand that this trade is essentially a 3rd and a 10 (or so) pick downgrade. It isnt a 3 and a 4 for Sanders. Its a 3 and a small pick downgrade for Sanders. The 5th round pick the Broncos are sending us back shouldnt be much worse than the 4th that we are sending them.

Sanu and Sanders play different roles. Sanu is a big slot; Sanders plays outside. I'd expect Sanders to take Marquise's snaps.

This is the type of guy I want on my team! He's thinking about the 8 year old kid that is wearing his jersey!
We may be able to recoup those picks with draft day trades, if not I'm good with Dee Ford and Sanders. It would be hard to land a 3rd or 4th round receiver that can help our offense right now. Plus he seems like a great mentor for the young recievers.
Question is, since we traded picks and not a player. Who gets cut to make room for Sanders spot on the roster?
Bourn, James, D-lineman?
