I still don't know what's wrong with just having Weeks 7, 8, 9 and 10 being bye weeks with eight teams each week, though.

This is the way to go in my opinion.
Players get half season rest and the league still has games every week.

The Niners had their bye the 4th week of the season. With the grind of the NFL a later date may be a better idea for vets to heal. Give all teams a break between the 9th and 12th weeks.
