True, but does anyone have any doubt that Smith would be calm voice in a rookies ear? If the road gets rocky is there a better player to instill confidence there is light at the end of the tunnel?

I think Smith has serious value in the QB stable, I am sure his work experience will at least help a rookie learn as he learns.

I don't doubt that at all. In my perfect world, we'd win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith and Frank Gore as backups and Joe Staley is our O-line coach.

I see 0 value for him as a player in SF but would love to have him as a coach.

Not sure on his ability to coach QBs, but if he had interest, I'd definitely bring him aboard as an assistant.

What is an offense? Its just a collection of concepts and plays. I guarantee you that Smith has seen just about everyting in Shanahan's playbook at one point in time or another. He's also familiar with just about every look a defense can throw at a quarterback and with many of the defensive coordinators around the league.

In many ways he'd be the perfect veteran backup though I'm a bit leery as to how long that knee would be able to hold up but if the team went ahead with the plan of starting their rookie passer Week 1, they couldn't possibly do any better than heaving a steady, smart veteran like Smith in their ear, working with them in the film room, helping them improve.
Sentimentally I'd love to bring Smith back to mentor a rookie if we were to trade Jimmy. I don't see any way in hell that happens though. SF kind of treated Alex Smith like s**t and then blamed him for it. I can't imagine he'd ever entertain the idea of coming back.
No no no
Alex has made a crapload a $. Yeah he's a smart dude. If he's truly smart he'll walk away.

Why the f would he wanna come back here? And why the f would he wanna coach or mentor anyone? He already did it with Mahomes.

I hope he retires and chills with his fam.

I completely agree but that entire team, coaching staff and front office is all different now.

He is. And I very well remember Camp Alex where he had the playbook for all of a couple of months. With that said, I don't see it. Not now at least. Would love for it to happen though.

Agreed. When QBs are as experienced as the Smiths and the Brady's, it's not about understanding offense, it's about understanding defense.
I can totally see him growing out a beard and finishing his career like Fitzpatrick. If anything happens to Jimmy, I hope we bring him in.
Straight up: Only way Alex comes here is if we trade Jimmy G. no room for him as is.
Maybe KC will give him another shot? He's better than Chad Henne for sure.

I don't know why we signed the scrub backups when Alex is available. I know he will cost a little more but the value he provides to the QB room is worth the cost.

If we could acquire him and keep Sherman, man, the foundation of this team will be as solid as it can ever be.

i am not opposed to getting alex though that seems very very remote . if the team signed the scrub from philly they really do not value alex. i am fine with sherman but i still think we need to get a cb with our number two pick.. its just my opinion but when you discuss foundation.. i look at young players that you sign to be the foundation or cornerstone of your team..... at one time. we thought aldon smith was the cornerstone or foundation of the defense. we thought wrong. i see bosa as the cornerstone or foundation of our team on defense... and i guess the rookie qb whoever it is will be the foundation of cornerstone of the offense since obviously we were all wrong that jimmy would be that person

well you guys on the zone hate injured players, Alex is the ultimate injury risk.
Mad respect for Alex.
Do not want him on this team.
Cowboys at this point might make the most sense. Alex can be the vet backup behind Dak with Dalton going.
Also McCarthy was with Alex his rookie year as the OC in SF.

Yeah I think that would be the perfect fit for him honestly. Actually, there's several places he would be the ideal backup.

I think it'd be funny if he wound up a Chief again. Otherwise, I think the Bengals, Chargers, Giants, or Colts could make a lot of sense too.
