I believe you're right about the strike, or lockout. Alex had no contract with a coach he barely knew. But he got everyone together and held his own camp. Definition of leadership and team first mentality.
roman never should have called a reverse to kyle with a wet ball on a wet field and that was a predictable disaster that led to the giants first score. i also blame jh,,,, he saw kyle messed up the first time.... he should have dropped NO ONE back there the second time. but he went with kyle and well,. we know what took place. thank you for clearing up that off season. i just remember we all thought alex was done. jh said wait a minute... then alex was a little scamp. stole a play book and did camp alex.. love it!!

Remember when JH had Smith be his caddy in a pro am golf tournament that same off season? He was courting Smith and building a relationship that whole time. Only to later stab him in the back and bench him after an injury of course...

i remember that! jh took some crap for it. but i thought well. this is the first coach we have had in forever who actually values a qb so go for it. the last part of your post makes me sad and angry. i trust alex holds no grudges against us and yes.. i would like to see him come back some day. be a coach or at least be honored at a game like we have with other people

Awesome how much respect he's getting all over social media and sports platforms. His face was plastered everywhere yesterday. Definitely a guy cherished among professionals and fans all across the entire NFL. Good for him.

Interesting that he won over the entire sports community, yet some Niner "fans" still cling to their emotional hatred of him for not living up to being the #1 pick. Even though he had ZERO say in that. Lol.

I doubt they are real fans of the team

their blind loyalty to their hate for a player prevents them from being objective.. yes. i am aware of the irony when it comes to cc and players like aa and mack. cc has no defense there

Has he ever gave indication he wants to coach? I'd love to see it.

preach.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a year away from football and then come back to coach in some capacity. However, his comment about taking some hikes with the kids leaves me to think he will enjoy his retirement and spend time with his foundation helping foster kids.

whatever community he lives in. it will be a better place.. he organized the search for the missing girl back in the day when he was with us and i think he threw himself into the community in kansas city. maybe he will end up coaching with urban myer? of course for sentimental reasons. i would like to see him. gore and staley and cowboy come here to coach..... but as others have said.... assuming they want to coach

If he ever wants to come back, I'm sure plenty of coaches would jump at the chance to add him to their staff. Hope he enjoys his retirement, however he ends up spending it.

I could see him end up like Beck. Individually teaching Fundamentals.
Alex Smith = real man.

He had an old school mentality: don't talk s**t and get things done.

KC folks loved him. He took over a team that was struggling to learn how to win and took them to the playoffs. That, and Mahomes' comments about how much Smith helped him learn how to approach the game mentally have left a sweet taste in the mouths of Chiefs fans.
"Though he only played for the franchise for five seasons, he without question belongs in the Chiefs Hall of Fame."

"While Smith is only a Hall of Very Good player on the national level, he was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback for the Chiefs during the peak of his career. He helped the team usher in an era it could be proud of after entering a situation that was undeniable chaos in 2013."

After he got beyond the Nolan/Singletary clusterf**k that started his career he went 80-36 in games started, threw 148 TDs and 56 Ints and added 13 TDs on the ground, In the playoffs he went 2-5 with 14 TDs 2 Ints, and 1727 yards.

I think that had he been given a fair shake in the first 5 years of his career he would have lived up to that #1 overall billing and we'd be debating over him vs Rodgers instead of if he were a bust or not. Of course, busts don't have 16 year careers in the NFL. I wonder how different things would have been if we had hired Norv Turner as head coach instead of Mike Nolan.
