Given the past comments from Mahomes, he would certainly seem to be a valuable asset as QB coach, especially now with Trey Lance. A lot of people probably forget how effective Smith was running the ball. Eventually, he took that one bad hit but that was not the result of a bad decision to run. IMO, Smith would be the ideal QB coach here.

Pass.

Set aside for a minute your lack of esteem for Alex Smith, and consider his background in Andy Reid's system and the regard Mahomes and others have expressed for his assistance in mentoring young QBs. Given all that, why would you not want him mentoring Lance?

Because Alex Smith taught Mahomes how to be a professional and how to prepare. That's a one year mentorship (if that). No one has any idea if he could actually be a good coach or not. Not you, not I, not my buddy Furlow....not a single person.

By the time Alex would be brought in (if he is), we should hope Lance has already learned how to be a pro, how to prepare, etc. Id rather an actual QB coach come in to help Lance progress.

But I know, hate right?

Over the years, numerous NFL writers have noted that a portion of the value of his contracts was his mentoring value to others on his team. Considering the size of those contracts (and his abysmal performance ), I'll rest on those observations.

Being a mentor and being a QB coach are not one and the same. Like I said before, no one has any idea if he could be a good QB coach or not. I prefer an actual QB coach.
There used to be vicious debates about this guy. Turns out they were both right. He was kinda good but not really worth of the #1 pick in a draft that had Aaron Rodgers. Oh well!

If you refer back to my original comment, it was about "assistance in mentoring young QBs." Bringing in an offensive assistant is a common thing. It takes nothing away from Scangarello who has not seemed to be able to move Garoppolo off his initial mark (at least in the eyes of those averse to Jimmy). It would simply allow Lance to see the game through the eyes of someone who has up until this season, seen many different defenses and played in what many observers assert is the most innovative offense in the league (Andy Reid's).

Of course, that will never happen as Smith has already said he wants to spend time with his family after all the years of the grind of time away.

You realize that every coach had to start without prior experience, right?

Sure. And my opinion is wanting one with experience. Yet you take that as hate. Just ridiculous.
I would take Alex as the QB coach, but I really doubt he wants that right now. I can see him continuing this ESPN gig he has, and in a couple years he might get that itch to be back in the NFL.

He's making more money as an analyst, and the grind as a coach just isn't for everyone.

Give him an assistant job if he wants one. Let him learn to coach. I could see him doing well at coaching with experience.
Just hate?

100%.
