Very few people like Alex exist in this world today...an inspiration to all.

Always a 9er. First.

You said it man, dude is amazing. Different o coordinators in his first 7 years woulda put most men out of the league with a quickness

Unfortunately, I think Alex will identify more as a Chief and "officially" retire with them. He went through hell in SF. And I know he had a lot of bad years here, so I hope I the usuals don't start to obsess about his play based on my post, but he has treated horribly by a large segment of Niner fans. Remember the drunk idiots booing him on Monday night when Singletary was coaching? Worse coach than tomsula

If I was him I would have some resentment towards the Niners. He got f**ked every year by the front office and coaches before Harbaugh. The fans treated him more unfairly than any player I can remember. Other dudes sucked or were controversial so it made sense, but I never understood the obsessive disdain for this guy. I never will

It is a truism that quarterbacks get more credit when things are good, and more blame when things are bad. than they deserve. This is also true of head coaches. In Smith's case, there was a perfect storm of excessive expectations.

First of all, FAR too much was expected of Nolan Jr. Long-time Niner fans remembered his father, who was good but was not as great as some remembered him. The result was that fans expected far more of him than he was capable of producing. As we learned, he had no clue about offense.

Second, the FO was abysmal. NFL observers held that the FO had allowed the talent level to drop below that of the expansion Houston Texans. The suits, led by John York, had no clue, and Nolan hiring was a good example of the fact.

Smith suffered from the same over expectations. When he failed to meet those expectations, for all the multiple reasons we have discussed here, all the failures of the FO, and of Nolan, and being shoved onto the field long before he was ready, a decade of fan frustration all rained down on him as the most visible target. It was grossly unfair but that is the way fans are. In my decades of watching 49er football, those Nolan/Singletary years were the worst years since the late 70s and the fans took it out on the QB.
Everyone that replaced him made it to the Super Bowl, but unfortunately the 49ers lost both. The E60 was brutal to watch. I was chocked up and horrified multiple times. This and the aftermath has got to be top 10 all time in sports injuries considering some have died, paralyzed, or the hockey Goalie that got his throat slashed. His leg looked like a war wound after the muscle and tissue removal after the infections. He said a lot of people would trade places with me right now: hot wife, good kids, probably made $100 million in his career, and got to live his sports dream. I'd love to see him throw another touchdown.

I find this to be spot on analysis. I feel the same way.

Do not continue down that road. That is not what this thread is about. If you persist, you will get a long vacation from NFL Talk.

Finally got to watch the Project 11 special. Damn. Smith's personality and character were always at the forefront of why I rooted for him. Obviously his mindset and approach to this injury solidifies that. As a coach and father, this is all I hope for my kids and players to embody. Success on the field and in life isn't always within our control, but one's mindset and outlook always are. Alex Smith is the master of both.

The fan in me would love to see him play again. The husband and father in me hopes he doesn't take that chance again. Either way, such an honor to have called him a 49er and cheered for him. Class act and warrior mindset to the end.
I wonder how Smith would have turned out in our current offense? Assuming he is the same age as when Harbaugh took over.

Great question. Seems well suited for his skillset.
Those pics of his leg were brutal. Looked like the leg on a rotting corpse. Its a miracle he didn't get it amputated.
