I have no idea if Jimmy G would or would not mentor.....but we know Smith will.
I was never a pro-Smith poster. I always had issues with him over Aaron, but this can't be understated. Smith is a GREAT dude. Top notch 100% great teammate and Human Being. He very well might have a future in Coaching.
I would love for the 49ers to get him a moderate long term team friendly contract and bring him in to mentor the assumed rookie. It would be great for the 49ers to send him out to retirement on Alex's terms and let him remain productive in the NFL. Smith has a unique life story to tell, and i suspect few people on this planet can be the calm voice speaking to a young QB about the ups and downs of being an NFL QB the way Smith can.
I will not speak for other anti-Smith posters....but I can speak for myself. I never "gave" Smith respect or blind faith, Smith "earned" every ounce of it from me the hard way. It would be amazing if the 49ers could bring him home and take him to retirement on his terms.

he should either ring chase as a back up or just retire and come coach for us

Only problem is Smith wouldn't know the offense any better than Fields would.

Earned two degrees in three years, IIRC.

True, but does anyone have any doubt that Smith would be calm voice in a rookies ear? If the road gets rocky is there a better player to instill confidence there is light at the end of the tunnel?
I think Smith has serious value in the QB stable, I am sure his work experience will at least help a rookie learn as he learns.

I don't doubt that at all. In my perfect world, we'd win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith and Frank Gore as backups and Joe Staley is our O-line coach.

I see 0 value for him as a player in SF but would love to have him as a coach.
