Will the 2020 NFL season be canceled due to COVID19?

Too much doom and gloom in here. Reminds me of the Super Bowl thread

I actually don't think it's the player health angle that will stop the season. Quite simply it's the fans in the stadium. Do local officials let 80,000 people get that close for 3-4 hours? They wouldn't now. So unless you think the virus situation changes it won't be allowed in the fall.

Then the next question is do you play in an empty stadium. I think that would come across poorly and depressing on tv and an earlier commenter mentioned it flopped in Australia.

For those that can't fathom it or think there is too much money involved, look at the NBA season being canceled and the NCAA tournament. And how many thought 2 months ago this would be our reality now?

The NBA season has not been cancelled. They're actually teeter-tottering between finishing the season in late summer or not.

Meanwhile, someone else in this thread mentioned MLB starting in August/September. The current proposal is actually mid-May.

We don't really know anything but right now the chances of there being no NFL season is very low.
Cancelled? NO... played in empty stadiums YES ( sound piped in) Thankfully the NFL is mostly a made for TV sport including pre scripted out comes. get yo popcorn ready
Need some mutherf**king good news at some point.

It's also going to be costly for the guys who have a big payday year. Like Jimmy G. He won't get that year of pay if they cancel the season. Just lost forever.

Im sure he's made enough money to survive. Regular hard working folks are the ones that have it tough.

Yeah I know and understand. But if you had some prior years lower and some future years lower and you get hit on the 1 year where you have a big balloon payment lump sum it's really a big hit on the overall contract. Several guys around the NFL like that who just happen to have 2020 as one of their really high pay years or in some cases the highest one.

Absolutely it disappears. For all of them. The NBA players just got paid up until what they played. They got like 90% of their salary. Not the other 10% of the season that was cancelled or whatever the number was. The payment is for roster bonus + games + incentives categories met + staying healthy. If no season. It = no money. He has not done any of those things. They don't just pay him tens of millions for a season that was cancelled and he didn't play. There is no money owed for that.

If the season is cancelled wouldn't the contract just continue once the games start getting played?

Sports contracts are per year each year by year one at a time. Perform for that year and get paid. Prorated per game.

2020 year - pay amount.
2021 year - pay amount.
2022 year - pay amount.

2020 league year cancelled. it means no TV money, no game tickets, no concessions. No season ever happened at all. Just a completely lost year. Cancelled out completely.

He would get paid starting 2021. 2020 cancelled and lost forever.

I think this COVID-19 deserves a Mayo countdown.

I agree
This bug is not going to go away. The purpose of this social distancing is to reduce the number of patients at any one time to prevent overloading health systems, not make the virus disappear.
4 months may be very very optimistic, but unless they find effective treatments in that time, it is probably very very unrealistic
