i see it as more of Kinlaw is trying to use what he's being taught and applying it in practice. I will wait to hold my judgement when the real games are actually played

That is a good point too, I agree.

Exactly what I was gonna say. IMO it's similar to a rookie QB throwing a ton of picks in camp...some of these guys need to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Kinlaw isn't likely to be Buckner of last year but as I've said a few times we don't need him to be that right away in order to still field a great DL. His size and strength alone will create issues for some OLines. Him working through things in practice and working to figure out what works makes sense.

People losing their sh*t because he's not winning every rep need to calm down. Then again what would the webzone be without overreactions?

If Kin was polished at his size coming out of South Carolina, he would have been a top 5 pick. We're a couple weeks into his first training camp with no rookie mini camps/OTAs. Dude is gonna struggle a little.

He will have some success this yr simply based on his size/athletic measurables. That said he's raw, plain and simple... it was talked about through the whole draft process. We have a great coaching staff and everything I've read he's putting in the work to improve. He's got Chris Jones upside and it took him a couple seasons to get where he is now (was also very raw coming out of college).

Like you said people need to chill-lax, patience is need we have a good DL and don't need him to be a pro-bowler the first yr (would be nice though )

Yeah, he'll be a good player - can't expect him to make the Pro Bowl his first year.

I agree. Look, I've been coaching and scouting for years. One of the major pluses on him that I've seen is that he's not only supremely talented, but that he's coachable. He's a player that you can "coach hard". Now, for us as coaches we have to be careful with players like that because they are susceptible to being over-coached, and coached out of his talent.

From what I've been reading it seems to me that Kinlaw isn't really "struggling", but that he's doing everything he can to apply the scheme and techniques beign coached to him, and not relying on his talent to muscle his way through drills. In no way am I saying that Saleh & Co. are over-coaching him. My point here is that I think Kinlaw will be fine. Give the kid some room to learn and apply the academics of the scheme. Hell, he fits in any scheme (3-4 or 4-3). Not saying that he's Buck, but he's gonna be a player we won't have to take off the field.

Lets pump the breaks
This kid will be a beast. All I want to see is health and improvement this year. If this kid can penetrate like we hope.... with Bosa, Ford, and Jones.... its not even going to be fair tbh. You will see Sherman and co smiling bigger and bigger as the season goes on because the pressure will make their jobs that much easier.

Anyone expecting instant greatness from him didn't really do their homework during the draft process imo.

FWIW it was the 14th pick

That's what happens when you reach to fill a need instead drafting bpa.

Was he a need though? More of a luxury pick if you ask me, defensive line would of been among the last position groups that I considered us having "needs"

I think it kind of was a need pick. Otherwise Solly is the 3tech? Maybe they didn't need to pick DT with the #14 overall, but they needed to fill the spot vacated by Buckner. The 49ers don't want a very good DL, they want a dominant DL.

I fully get both sides. 3T is also one of those positions you can rotate with different skill sets (run defender + pass rusher). 41 DT's were available in FA alone. Lots of specialists and some more well rounded ones too. I felt we could have nabbed a couple cheaper ones (Kinlaw isn't cheap) and gone another direction like IOL, WR or ER early. Far more important needs. Quality DT's are always available now. So much so, some can't even find jobs.

But if he's transcendent, he makes the back 7's job so much easier, they can afford to go with some less talented DB's and LB's.

Truth. I don't expect much in individual run defense or anything outside a bull rush at this point. I'm giving him a couple years. #14 definitely needs to bring much more value and production over guys like ST, Jones, Street, Givens and Taylor though.

When you get spoiled by so many instant impacts the past few drafts it's gonna be rough having another AA kinda prospect. But I have been keeping my expectations low for Kinlaw I think I had him at 2.5 sacks this year. Anything more than that I'd be thrilled

I'm not interested in sacks from him. We sucked against the run and he just needs to focus on shutting the run down.
