I'm worried about Javon Kinlaw's knee. Is the team just managing a chronic condition the best it can or is there some hope of improvement? — Brian K.

He was dealing with swelling in his knee as training camp approached and that appears to be the current issue as well. It seems similar to the issue Jalen Hurd has: The 49ers can get the swelling and pain down with rest and rehabilitation, but as soon as either player has any extended action, it returns. Having said that, a couple of others — McGlinchey and Dee Ford — dealt with knee tendinitis in recent seasons and appear to be managing it this season.

As a team doc, how do you allow the org to sign a high priced player knowing there's almost no happy ending for a big man in the trenches with knee issues?!?!? I know he was picked AFTER we supposedly revamped our player medical assessment but damn this is constantly coming back to bite us in the ass. We have got to stop projecting oft-injured players as key/critical starters. We place too much faith in their future availability. At some point this is self-inflicted hardship. Lynch has got to be more skeptical.

It was known he had knee issues. I'm sure the doctors told the FO this, but they drafted him anyhow. That is a big problem. Not the first time they ignore some red flags and draft a guy too high. Foster comes to mind as the most egregious.

If this is a Lynch thing he needs to be moved away from drafting responsibility's.
For the rest of the season they shouldn't have Kinlaw practice at all and just use him in games. I know it hurts his development moving forward but I would rather that than not having him available for games. We need him for our run defense.
What a disaster.
Any chance he plays Sunday?

Omfg

49ers biggest rivalries by decades
80s:Rams
90s:Cowboys/Packers
00s: too garbage
10s:Seahawks/injuries
20s: injuries again?!

But but but guys, It's not an "issue". Probably won't be bc plenty of players play thru this as we've been told. However the REALITY is he's already missing games.

Yeah we need some NY85 and genus minimizing in here for positivity and mental health reasons.

This isn't good.

Thanks for posting Hoov.

I know right? So disappointed especially after Kinlaw posting he's not injured

He's not practicing yet. Not a good sign.
it's ok, i've read AA plays well inside
It's fine, there's nothing to worry about with his knees, this is normal for big guys. Once his legs are amputated, then we can start to worry.

OK NY85.

So as long as he doesn't play he will be fine

Shanahan was asked if Kinlaw's injury is something that might have to be managed throughout the season.

"We're not sure. That's why we're trying to take it slow with him," Shanahan answered. "And when we have, it's gotten better. So, you've got to see how that continues to react. I think we'll be easy with him today. Hopefully, if it continues to go well today, he'll get out there more tomorrow.

"When he hurt his knee in Dallas last year, it was a pretty bad injury that he ended up going on IR. He got it cleaned up, but it still hasn't healed quite as right as we want. So, it seems like it [is better], but when he's gone, it's just started to affect him. So hopefully, taking it easy these last 10 days or so, it will start to get better, and we'll see how it goes day to day."

They keep pivoting to Dallas but he was already on a pitch count prior to that. No doubt after that, it got far worse but...

That's a total bummer. I would have loved to see him get 100% healthy and take that next step.

Oh well. I'm not sure what could be fair and realistic expectations for him at this point.

Eh there was no pitch count. He had the most snaps of any interior DL last year by a pretty decent margin. The DAL game he was at about 48 snaps and the 2 prior games was right about the same. Rams game was the only game they really cut back on his snaps, but I think it was because Givens was playing so well
but agreed him getting limited now is a huge disappointment and not feeling great it's going to get much better this year.

Welp no 1st rounders for a couple years so looks like we're going to have to overpay in FA anyways. Again how did this save us money with Buck 49ers FO?

That's a good question.
