Probably why the team didn't exercise his 5th year option.

Many want to come here to revive their careers and go on to better paydays elsewhere.

This is key. It helps get some great compensatory picks later on when they are signed away. I believe Brock purdy was a compensatory pick because of a free agent signing. (or something like that). Breida being traded away, and us getting a 5th round pick for him - helped get Trent Williams. Anyway, agree, the bottom line is having undervalued players come here on the cheap, improve their play, and then get signed away by other teams for millions.

Kinlaw may come back on a low 1-year deal just to improve his stock. He has had plenty to overcome so far in his career and the light is finally starting to shine with this kid. His health was obviously a factor, but his maturity was an issue as well. he was one of the younger guys in his draft class and he came from a pretty messed up childhood, so he was always going to need time to become a professional.

One of the reasons I think he might sign back here has been the impact Armstead has had on him. Go watch the video of Wilks announcing Armstead's nomination for Walter Payton Man of the Year and Kinlaw features heavily talking about Armstead helping him become a man. It's easy to forget that these players come into the league as boys/young men who have no idea what it is like to be self-sufficient in all aspects. The fact that Kinlaw experienced all of that professional adversity and is still grinding speaks volumes of his personal determination and the team's leadership around him. If he gets a big payday elsewhere, good luck. If he signs back with the team, I wouldn't bet against him
Really disappointed Kinlaw couldn't build on a couple good games and keep it rolling. He was horrendous yesterday.

Below are the three lowest-graded 49ers players on defense.

  • Javon Kinlaw, DT, 25.7, 45 snaps
  • T.Y. McGill, DT, 28.1, 29 snaps

Looks about right, yikes
Occasional 1 good play followed by many bad plays in a row too. Mostly disappointing and injured a lot. Bad attitude too.
He flashes here and there like we've seen this year. Just seems like a good backup that needs guys like Hargrave & Armstead ahead of him doing damage and wearing down O linemen so he can then rotate in freshly and make some plays. Not what you want ideally from a #14 overall pick.

Ya this was a good opportunity for him to show he can be a solid starting DT. He seems to only do good in small spurts. I would bring him back but only for a cheap contract.. 1-2 years 2-3 mil a year.

If I recall coming out of college they basically said he's a pass rushing DT and not good against the run. Until yesterday he's done pretty well vs. the run this season imo, but he got murdered yesterday. I agree they can have success with him as a rotational guy, but that's going to be his ceiling on this team.

He was drafted for his pass rush upside similar to Trey Lance and his physical tools. Kinlaw was never a great pass rusher in college, but he's quite literally got all of the physical tools you'd want in one. Unfortunately, this is who Kinlaw is and has always been since college--a poor pass rusher with small spurts of good run defense play. Yesterday further proved my point a few pages ago that Kinlaw is nothing more than a backup whose future people spend way too much time worried about. His role as a run defender is easily replaced on day 3 by a healthy squattier, stronger interior DL whose built to take on double teams and stay in a gap for 25+ snaps a game. We need 2 of those guys. That's really what we're missing on this DL.

there was no rotation Davis got injured like in the first quarter

we had 3 DT for the whole game there was no way it was going to work
Solomon Thomas might be better than this guy.

Really sad. He is not improve the game and missed the tackle when he scored for TDs. I guess. We will let him to walking for free agent next season!
