If I recall coming out of college they basically said he's a pass rushing DT and not good against the run. Until yesterday he's done pretty well vs. the run this season imo, but he got murdered yesterday. I agree they can have success with him as a rotational guy, but that's going to be his ceiling on this team.
He was drafted for his pass rush upside similar to Trey Lance and his physical tools. Kinlaw was never a great pass rusher in college, but he's quite literally got all of the physical tools you'd want in one. Unfortunately, this is who Kinlaw is and has always been since college--a poor pass rusher with small spurts of good run defense play. Yesterday further proved my point a few pages ago that Kinlaw is nothing more than a backup whose future people spend way too much time worried about. His role as a run defender is easily replaced on day 3 by a healthy squattier, stronger interior DL whose built to take on double teams and stay in a gap for 25+ snaps a game. We need 2 of those guys. That's really what we're missing on this DL.
In summary he doesn't try his best all the time and doesn't have "a motor" which is a trait found in top nfl players. He takes plays off and gets fooled easily. And this isn't when his red flagged knees are swollen and needs to be drained.
We will need him to have his spirts and maybe get lucky tomorrow without AA and a recovering Hargrave.
