Two things; it is not blatant as Redskins. Two, the Hunt family has a great deal more respect around the nation than does Daniel Snyder.

Should the Golden State Warriors be renamed too?

May as well go all the way and rename the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots while we're at it.

redskin is an actual slur, this isn't hard to understand

Yes. I agree Redskins should be changed.

I'm saying if they change it to Warriors that's fine. That was my point.

I've seen far more white people offended by the name than actual Natives but if enough people want it changed, go ahead and change it. The franchise will still suck no matter what they call it as long as Snyder is the owner.

That poll only required the polled to be 1/16 Native American. So, basically, a lot of white Redskins fans who claimed to have a little Native American blood didn't think it was offensive.

A lot of white, black, hispanic and indian people never found this image pejorative, demeaning, or insulting, Which is why the mascot and name has remained for so long.

This whole episode smacks of staged, pre-planned institutional pr which is intended to convince audiences that the NFL "really cares"...about something besides making money.

Which they don't.

Anyway, does anyone have a link to a cogent statement regarding why the stereotype of the Redskins mascot is insulting to Native Americans?

Since -- unlike many black stereotypes over the years-- the personal qualities evinced by the mascot are positive -- fearsome, capable, strong, masculine, proud, unself-conscious, rooted in heritage and tradition. Seems like a come up not a bring down.

Besides the fact that stereotyping in general should be avoided, is there something particular to the emblem which is offensive? Is there a link to a good discussion somewhere?

Should oklahomans rebel against the stereotype of gun happy immigrants? Nebraskans rebel over corn-shucking farmers? The redskins mascot is way better than those.
The fact there is even a debate about this name is a testament to how it has been normalized.

Normalized? No one uses the term at all, except when referring to the football team.

I never do. Who uses the term redskin when talking about Native Americans? No one.

I admit the stereo type is pretty cliche...but it's a mascot, a hyped up exaggerated portrayal of something to strike fear in the hearts of opponents and pride in fans.

Plus, i'm sorry but it's boss. Way cooler than A LOT of other logos.

If its truly offensive and repressive imagery for some, I guess it should go,

Anyone have that link?

I like that Red Hawks one. what about the "Hogs" ... a little nod to their own history. Redtails would be really cool. A great nod to the first black American fighter pilots. Hell they could easily keep their colors and the "R" logo if they wanted too.
Washington Black People
George Washington had slaves.

Should we rename Washington too?
How about change the name to the Washington Natives? To my knowledge the word "native" isn't offensive. Plus, the team won't have to change the logo, unless the Native American community sees the logo as offensive, in which case they should change that too.
Washington Foreskins

no matter what their name is, as long snyder is the owner they will remain irrelevant.

The "Chiefs" makes no reference to skin color and although the term has been used in a pejorative manner by some to refer to a Native American person, I'm sure this name is not going to face the same level of scrutiny by the community. We also have the responsibility of assuming good intentions and I don't believe we can conclude that the use of the word Chiefs has racist origins.

Bump for those asking the same questions.

As I grow older, I realized I have to somewhat let go of my past and let the younger generation have their future.

The name needs to change.

I remembered the stupid Hogs in the 80's. I hope the new name is something stupid

What a brilliant statement that is. Wish more of the older generations thought that way
