I consider Reed more like a big WR than a TE. When Reed was a rookie in WAS (Kyle was OC), he lined up in the slot, detached from the line, many times.

Niners probably had him go see specialist doctors about his head injuries to make sure they don't get sued by him or his family as a condition of signing him. If Reed says he can play and passes the physicals why not? Reed can also retire at any time if he wants to.
