well when it's worded that way of course most people will say no. even i would say no. it's a bs number. if that was anyhow true, ratings would be like 500k viewers, not 18 mil, like Thursday Night just did.
I just read last night was down 13% from last year's Thursday Night opener.
There were several other options to watch last night. The game was'nt close and there were NBA and NHL playoff games on at the same time. You also have MLB all around the country and the US Open tennis was on. Each of these factors likely syphoned off some of the audience. If the game had been close and gone down to the wire the ratings would have been higher. You also had a lot of people displaced from their home because of the recent hurricanes in the south and the fires out west.

That was before the COVID caused the HUGE economic downturn/ unemployment.
Netflix on the other hand added 15 million subscribers in the 1st quarter .
Ya i wonder how many people had to get rid of cable since covid.

With several million out of work and benefits running out, I imagine that was one of the first things they got rid of. The people that were affected by the hurricanes and fires either have no home or have more on their mind than football. The NFL still drew more viewers than anything else that week so I don't think they're worried.

I thought I would drop this here because it deals with the subject matter in this here thread. It was written in 1940 by a young Allen Drury, a Stanford graduate who would later win the Pulitzer Prize for his signature novel: Advise and Consent. This, however, was written much earlier. It's part of an unpublished manuscript called Citizenship, which Drury wrote in 1940, shortly after he graduated in 1939.
"I cannot tell you how to feel when the flag goes by, or what prayers to offer for the Republic, or how you should cast your vote to the most consistent with its preservation. I can no more establish a criterion for you than you for me. All we can do for each other is to try to exchange, quietly as possible, such information on the state of our own minds and hearts as may contribute toward mutual understanding and good will, and so in some manner lend the strength of our common sympathy to the common effort. That is undertaking enough, God knows, and of a nature to daunt the most hardy."
Drury, who passed in 1998, was considered a strong conservative. His books fell out of favor as the country became more liberal in later years and actually went out of print at one point. I found this part of Citizenship to be rather surprising, especially the first line, which is underlined.
I am currently narrating a few of his books, which are now back in print, and Citizenship has been included in one of them.

I know it's more complicated nowadays in the digital tv world but Cutting the chord doesn't apply to Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS. They're not cable.

Streaming games illegally is becoming easier and easier.
Bars in areas still arent open
on the other hand with fans not allowed in stadiums numbers should in theory go up

Most millennials and now gen z aren't going out and buying digital antennas so they can watch football, they just stream it illegally.
The only cord cutters I know that are buying antennas are old people, 40 and up that still feel the need to watch the local news or some sitcom.
I haven't had cable/satellite/digital TV since I moved out of the house 10 years ago.

It would only increase viewers by about 900,000 people across the nation for all the games... it's not that much to be honest.

At what point will people stop being hypocrites pretending to care while they sit in an chair and drink beer during the anthem? That is mein primary question.
