The chiefs could afford to do so and still pay alex smith sizeable sum. We cannot.
I'm all for drafting a qb without trading significant trade capital.
I'm against any trade ups that include another first rounder.
For every mahomes there are three rgiiis, goffs and wentzes.
Zach Wilson has high ceiling but also a high bust chance. Drafting him pure off arm talent is risky. Drafting him while trading up multiple assets is taking all your chips and betting them on a single number.
Trevor Lawrence has a high floor so at least you can justify trading up for him. Although I still would not do it.
For Wilson though? You're taking a gamble that if I doesn't work out, sinks the franchise.
SF will have over $120M in cap space in 2022 by cutting Jimmy/Ford/Richburg and a couple other small moves.
A rookie QB resets the cap space, so money isn't a issue. So moving some picks to go get a player that has a chance to be a LT answer at the most important position in sports, is totally worth it. They will have $ to replace those lost draft picks with prove players. Giving up an extra 1st pick doesn't destroy the team at all imo.
Alex smith was making $13M in 2017, Thats not a considerable amount of money.
You talk about a rookie QB possibly being a bust, well so could the players being drafted with those future picks given up...Thomas/Foster even McG hasn't been worth their pick, Pettis in the 2nd etc.
Sinking the franchise is settling because you were to afraid to go get the player you wanted...if they think Wilson is the guy go get him. If they think Jones is on the same level then draft him.
As far as Wilson goes, it's more than just arm talent.
