Zach Wilson, QB, Denver Broncos

I mean the Rams certainly didn't give up a bunch of picks to move up for Goff thinking that they'd be dumping him a few years later. If Shanahan is completely sold on a QB like Wilson then I'm fine with them making a move to be able to draft him but you only go QB if you really believe they are THE QB, not because they are highly ranked or because you think you need a QB. That is how you talk yourself into RG3, Jared Goff, Josh Rosen, or Daniel Jones.

So I know the combine got cancelled but are teams going to be allowed to conduct private workouts ?

Doesn't look like it, all over video. Meetings and taped workouts.

To be honest I think Zach's put enough tape out there this year to where that doesn't matter.

I think it hurts Lance the most, won't be able to show off the work he's been putting in, and he only played 1 game this year.

No, they'll be able to observe guys at their Pro Day workouts and that is pretty much it. I expect a higher than normal amount of busts in this upcoming draft class.

Pro day is something at least, I thought they were just going to be filmed. Better if you can go there.

I agree especially since lance didn't play last year.

Lynch and Shanahan should be following the Chiefs model this draft. The Chiefs are in consecutive Super Bowls because they took a chance and drafted Mahomes who they believed was their franchise QB despite having a good QB, Alex Smith, in place. We are now in that same spot. We have Jimmy G who is good but we need to land Wilson or Fields imo, preferably Wilson. Jimmy continues to start this coming year while the rook learns Shanny's offense. Plus the rook will likely get a chance to start since Jimmy usually gets injured at some point during the season. Assuming we hit on either Wilson or Fields, that will help our salary cap. It also will cost us less compensation in the form of draft picks as we will only have to give up likely 2 first rounders and probably one or two mid round picks as opposed to Watson who will command 3 (maybe 4) first rounders plus however many other mid round picks.

I get what you are saying but the Chiefs model of success is nothing new. History has shown that plenty of teams have done the same exact thing the chiefs did but the QB they picked turned out to be a bust and the coaches and GMs who believed in those QBs are jobless.

I'm all for it but it's not my job that's on the line. It's not as simple as just trading up and thinking you will strike gold like the Chiefs did. They were very fortunate and more than half the teams that do it are not.

What irks me about this is that Shanahan and Lynch had just signed six year contracts. They had all the cushion in the world to take a risk and chose to play it safe with Solomon Thomas and Kirk Cousins (the original plan). I have all the faith in the world on Shanahan with play design. Not so much with the guts to take a big risk like drafting a quarterback.

I'd love to disagree with this but it's very hard to.

The counter is that we could have taken a swing at Trubisky, where would we be then? The draft is so tough.

Teams will be allowed a limited number of reps that can attend in person. They can't bring a whole platoon of scouts, execs and coaches like you normally see attend for the bigger schools.

It'll be like the drafts of the 60s-80s. With that said, film study, picking guys that fit your system. and interviews will be huge. I think the format benefits a staff like ours.

Honest question.... what makes you say that? There are many people that claim the combine is fools gold with workout times, etc. Teams can still have their guys hand time and trust their numbers and interview virtually, right? Isn't full the most important according to most decision makers?

It's not so much the Combine but everything else that is involved in the offseason circuit.

I think private workouts and being able to meet with prospects, sit at a table with them and talk to them eye to eye is incredibly valuable. You get a feel for a guy's character, some insights into what makes them tick, its just more information that you can't get from watching film.

I also don't think you can replicate that stuff through Zoom meetings. There's definitely something lost in not being able to spend time with these guys in person.

Interesting. Personally, I haven't noticed too much being lost. They will at least possibly have the benefit of recording it if they ever need to review again.
