Zach Wilson, QB, Denver Broncos

Some facts:

1) The San Francisco 49ers were on hand for former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance's pro day today, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. The team representatives did not include general manager John Lynch or head coach Kyle Shanahan, though.

2) Despite drafting a wide receiver in the first and second round of the past two drafts, the position remains a need for the San Francisco 49ers. On Tuesday morning, Alabama held its pro day. There were about a dozen general managers on hand, but John Lynch wasn't one of them.
Does that mean the team isn't interested in QB Mac Jones, or is this a smokescreen?

3) The #49ers observed at BYU pro day/Zach Wilson day: * GM John Lynch * Ass't GM Adam Peters * Dir. of College Scouting Ethan Waugh

4) All 3 of the Jets GM Joe Douglas, Head Coach Robert Saleh , and Offensive Coordinator Mike LaFleur attended the BYU pro day

5) Attending the QB Pro Days had no bearing on the 49ers decision to move up, since they were looking to trade up for weeks prior. Again attending or not attending pro days could be smoke screens.

6) Would still be interesting to see who from the Jets and 49ers attend Fields pro day.

I find it strange that the 49ers would "settle" for more than one QB after making a trade like this. "oh if we don;t get this guy, we can get him??" You don't make this trade unless absolutely know who they are going to get for sure at #3. Zach Wilson is going #2 (maybe heard it from Saleh). So they know their guy is available.

So you ask this same question for each of the 3 Qbs, Fields, Jones, Lance - if the other two Qbs were not in the draft would you take that QB?

If Fields and Jones were not in this draft, would the 49ers jump to 3 to take Lance?
If Lance and Jones were not in this draft, would the 49ers jump to 3 to take Fields?

Getting to #3 now makes it feasible to get to #2. But, the Jets may want Wilson badly, so they're not going to entertain offers. It appears that a conclusive narrative has emerged that Wilson is the definitive #2 QB in this draft. I know a couple of his uncles/great uncles and this is a highly intelligent, accomplished family. He's going to excel in the interviews, wonderlic, etc all the stuff outside of the physical part of the game, and his pro day was apparently impressive.

The question I have is what will change for the Jets for them to actually improve with Wilson instead of Darnold. I loved Darnold in college and I still have the feeling he can be a good QB, but I fear he's now damaged similarly to what happened to David Carr's career.
They could still trade back if the guy they want gets taken ahead of them. I'm guessing they have at least 2 guys targeted so that's unlikely but i don't know what's in their head.

Same could be said for Fields. We don't know who the JETs love.

On NLFN they said that Lynch and Peters were both at Bama's pro day and said that they were the 1st ones to talk to Mac Jones. I believe that is what I heard anyway.

During the season wasn't there talk of Peters doing extensive work on Jones and Wilson? I firmly believe it's going to be one of them two. They ahve always been the two best fits for us.

Everyone keeps mentioning that maybe it's Lance because we just had his pro day but I really think it's going to be Fields.

I really like Jones. Best footwork in the pocket by a large margin and I would like him to be our QB but that ship has sailed now with this trade to #3 imo.
The best hope is Fields tears it up during his pro day and the jets take him 2nd. Unless Lynch can work some magic and get em to trade picks with us
If Wilson is gone and they still want Mac I'd see if the panthers trade up to 3 and we go back down to 8. Mac should be there. We can recoup some of the capital we lost already.

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could get their first next year and a third this year and still get the QB Shanny wants? However I imagine they traded to three to make sure they did.

That's a hell of a risk. I do not see it happening. I firmly believe the 49ers view Wilson and Jones 1a and 1b. Wilson likely goes to the Jets, and the 49ers take Jones. Jets pass on Wilson and the 49ers take Wilson. The only way I see the 49ers moving out of the third spot is if both Wilson and Jones are available--then the 49ers might move down a spot (again and again until only one is left). But there is no scenario where I see the 49ers risking both Wilson and Jones being taken (with the consensus being TL goes #1).

And then here comes Billy Big Balls trading up to 7 to scoop Jones from right in front of us.

They didn't trade away three first round picks just out of hope of getting Wilson then moving back down if he's gone . They're taking someone at 3 no matter what.
Was Wilson throwing with 49ers logo footballs at his pro day?
