Unless we lose out, relying on potential trades to get a rising QB in the draft is going to be tough. Based on what I have seen and heard I would like to draft him but not getting my hopes up.
The FO should be willing to trade / give up just about anything to get Wilson. If it takes 3 years of first round picks and something more to move up to get him, so be it. We need a QB like him to be competitive long term in this division where R. Wilson, Murray and Goff reside. No more settling for the castoffs of other teams, reclamation projects (Darnold), or old veterans like Ryan or Cousins. We need to get young and dynamic at the QB position like the rest of the NFL is moving toward. Just my 2c.
The issue is there are many QB needy teams. Another team picking ahead of us could very well have the same idea.
So assuming(and it's still early to assume this) we get like 10th pick but Lawrence/Fields go 1/2. Why would the team picking at #3 take our trade offer instead of an equal offer from a weaker team? I would imagine offering up our 2022 1st rounder or whatever we offer the team in question would assume we'd get back on track.
So it's fun to evaluate these guys and say I want him but until we actually see where we pick, who's in the draft and how things unfold it's pointless.
I'd love to have Wilson here but IMO he's playing out of our range. As beat up as we are I don't see us picking early enough to snag him without the trade up and I simply don't know if we'll make that move or have the ammo to make it.
Fair points.
One thing in our favour if it becomes a back and forth in trade offers with another team is that team may be a lot more needy in other positions than we are.
I know a FQB is important but would those teams be willing to give up half their draft over a two year period to outbid us with so many other needs? I hope not.
The reasons you state above are why I'm watching the teams below us closely and where they finish.
If the Giants are at 3 or 4 and not ready to move on from Jones there's no way they trade with Washington over us, ditto Dallas.
Miami (via Houston) and New England aren't likely to trade.
Panthers and Falcons etc.
We'll be last in our division so we don't have to worry about that as much as other teams.
I'm hoping we can sneak into the cracks that appear in the top 10 so where qb neddy teams and their division rivals finish up is very interesting to watch for me.
