One thing I do wonder if it is Mac, is what happens when Kyle gets a smart QB over several seasons?
We've seen Matt Ryan excel, but we didn't get to see year 3 or Year 6 Kyle & Ryan.
Does his offense go to even higher levels?
Maybe that's a question that's he's asking himself.
Like that article said of another GM's opinion: Mac is good, but needs a lot around him. You would be happy with him right away, but left wanting after a few years realizing wysiwyg. Pretty damn accurate imo.
I think Mac's ceiling is a lot higher than most pro-Fields and Lance folks think, and you can build a good offense around him. If you have a Kyle Shanahan 2.0 on the gridiron with all the hybrid players he'll surround Mac with, this can possibly be the positionless offense NCs always talked about. It might be the next step up from Walsh's WCO.
Mac is a better thrower and more accurate than given credit for here on the WZ. He also has what Kurt Warner calls "QB athleticism." Not so much athleticism overall which he isn't actually bad at. But the ability to move and shift around the pocket and sense what's happening around him. He does do that well. He isn't nearly as bad of an athlete as the WZ portrays him to be. They are just comparing him to elite athletes like Fields and Lance. Of course he is less than that. But it doesn't mean he is a terrible athlete. Because he's not.
All that said I feel like it's picking Jimmy G 2.0. We already got that. The problem is Jimmy can't stay healthy. But he's roughly a similar player. Plays from the pocket and doesn't do a huge amount of things off schedule or run around a lot. I just don't see why you pick Jimmy G 2.0. We already got that except he can't stay healthy.
Kyle has repeatedly stated the *reason* they moved up and gave a ton of draft capital is to strengthen the QB position BECAUSE of Jimmy's injuries. I get the feeling he's totally fine with Jimmy but for the fact he's almost 30 and has been injured a lot. So if Mac is Jimmy 2.0 that is younger, maybe a bit better mobility, arm strength, same quick release and intangibles -- I think hed be happy because Jimmy got him within 10 minutes of a Lombardi.
If he really wanted to get a more mobile model why did he cut Brock Rutter vs putting him on the practice squad, why bring in joe Flacco, sign Sudfeld, Rosen? (Josh Johnson i think is the guy that mimics the two midgets in the NFC west) why have an ancient Josh Johnson vs a younger mobile version to mimic the two midgets in practice? I don't think he's changed his mind regarding athleticism vs intangibles.
