Whatever the decision is I would feel better about it if it were a normal year with scouts on campus, a combine, and in person private workouts. I've kind of been wondering if this were the right year to make this move. I get it, if Jimmy stays healthy, we probably would pick to low to make this move next year, and we may lose the ability to extend Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.

This applies to any pick they make though. Some people will be furious at drafting Lance because of the lack of throws and Fields for him holding onto the football/medical issue.... its a wide stretch to assume he means Mac Jones here.

He's not wrong, but the timeline of tolerance is going to be compressed based on who the pick is. If it's Jones, and he starts the season and doesn't play well initially, the fans aren't going to have patience and the negativity will begin to seep into the locker room.

If there are fans on opening week, prepare for the "we want Sudfield!" Or "we want Rosen!" chants if Jones throws a pick.

Jones is not going to get the benefit of the doubt that most rookie QBs taken that high would get.

I'm going to be doing that regardless of the pick. Whoever we pick should be starting day 1 imo.

So the 49ers are potentially not drafting the QB they wanted to draft because they want someone who is more pro ready? Do they think we're stupid?

And if they trade out Jimmy for a rookie, good luck selling that to that locker room.

"If the Niners end up taking Mac Jones over Trey Lance, which is the way it looks as of right now, it's because of what they could not accomplish during the offseason," wrote Pauline. "The team really wanted to sign a veteran quarterback and went hard after Andy Dalton as well as Joe Flacco.

"The game plan was then to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, likely to the Patriots, draft Lance, and let him sit for most of the season. The inability to sign Dalton or Flacco put them in a bind and now makes taking a quarterback who's more NFL-ready a priority."

Yea, that's a terrible reason that is very shortsighted, but coaches and GMs usually have to be shortsighted, because if they're not they get fired before they see the fruits of their long term planning. That said, if they feel like Lance needs a year to sit, then just keep Jimmy for a year.

It's probably not really the logic of the 49ers, just probably other GMs and scouts trying to rationalize why Kyle Shanahan is so high on a noodle armed statue.
