eh, Captain Checkdown.
Cosell talked about how overall Bill gave him easy reads and the defenses they played in preseason were pretty vanilla overall. Thought he has some nice throws vs NY week 3 but I still see a lot of the same stuff That imo made him a high floor low ceiling dude. Velocity subpar and his ability to make plays from a muddy pocket/extend is meh overall.
we will see, we need to realize we aren't gonna have an answer for a couple yrs…for me I wanted fields over both.
The defenses were the most vanilla I've ever seen in a preseason. Mac faced more than 4 rushers only 7 times the entire preseason.
5 times vs Washingon
0 times vs Eagles
2 times vs Giants
7 times in 59 dropbacks.
Trey saw 5 or more rushers on 22 of 52 drop backs.
I don't care to argue this much, but the defense the Raiders put on the field vs us was the worst NFL product I have ever seen. So not sure you wanna go there
Way to narrow down the entire preseason to one game. Mac faced starters in 10 minutes of one game. The game where the Giants rushed more than 4 twice, and Mac had his worst stretch of the preseason (one pass completed that was more than 5 yards past the LOS). So get out of here trying to compare the level of competition when it was damn near even.
The point wasn't the quality of the defenders, but the way the defense played. Mac faced vanilla defenses and Trey faced actual schemes (or at least a heavy pass rush).
Again, I'm not arguing this stuff, because preseason stats don't matter at all, only observing traits and what not matters. We've seen Mac work comfortably in the pocket and avoid pressure by climbing, we have seen Trey look fidgety and extremely uncomfortable there even with a clean pocket. That's the bottom line as far as I'm concerned with preseason.
On to games that matter
Yet Mac was sacked 5 times to Trey's 6.
Again, not about stats but about visuals. Big difference. If you can't admit Trey looked uneasy in the pocket and Mac didn't, we aren't going to find any common ground.
I think the problem is, with you, is that you cemented yourself as a Mac Jones fanboy. Your name says it all. People have a hard time taking you seriously because we think you cannot be impartial towards Lance. It's totally fine if you think Mac will have the better career, is better right now, etc, but that's just what it is right now.
Just like NY85 cemented himself as a Trey Lance guy. Everything is negative about Jimmy. You really have to read between the lines and find the truth in someone's argument if they will never find the positives in something else.
That's absolutely understandable. I have no quarrels with that stance and I really do not care who or who doesn't take me seriously.
However, I was never all over the top about Mac and didn't even start defending him that much until half the posts in this thread were over the top harsh about Jones. I really saw a large lack of understanding the basic nuances of the position from the "Fat Mac", "he can't get out of the pocket so he sucks" elementary insult crowd. To be honest, I didn't even want him starting for Alabama last year. I was very pro Bryce Young…..but, Mac went out and was damn near perfect. He made it to where we were never worried about converting a 3rd and long, not sweating a turnover, and just always had 100% confidence in the offense. Not Tua, not Hurts or any other of the starters on our title teams had ever looked close to as good as he did. Of course, he had 1st rounders everywhere but he had to go out and produce.
Not to mention, we saw and heard things about him running the scout team vs the starting defense that no one believed till last year. One was when Saban said told him to do something different, or to stop doing something, and he told Saban to "have your defense stop it". Talk.
In short, he has made me a believer.
Furthermore, and this is nothing personal against Lance, as I think he is a great person. I wanted any other of the first 4 qbs but him. I didn't like trading up for any of those guys anyway.
With Lance, the track record is just not there. There's more unknowns to him than any qb I've seen taken that high. He was just as much a runner as thrower in his one year on college.
And to add, the way he's looked in the pocket tells me he has a loooong ways to go before becoming a consistently playable qb in the league. I don't expect everyone to agree, but that's what I see.
