When i saw the TV replay of this, I thought "I've never seen a play like this designed to be thrown 7 yds down the field."

Great 49ers gift ideas
Had Agholor wide open for a TD and nobody within 10 yards of him when he decides to throw underneath.

Let the excuses roll right in but this is what you'll get with a guy like mac

You could also make the argument he's just playing too fast. Looks like he didn't even consider the deeper throw. You'd also like to see him hit Smith in stride instead of making him have to almost stop completely to catch that ball.

We don't know how he being coached and what the play design called for. The play picked up a first down and that may have been the goal.

"Let's get a 1st down instead of a touchdown"

That's a new one! Keep it up!

Cool but that doesn't tell us the reads. It tells us that upon watching tape Mac is critical of himself for what he perceives as a missed 6 points but that does not mean he read it wrong.

Again, I get it. You are looking for any and all negatives to push a Mac sucks narrative. This ain't it chief and I am done with this discussion.

Why do you keep saying this ain't it chief

And I think the point is and always has been Mac is and will be a fine QB, but don't expect consistent big plays or anything special. There's nothing wrong with being just a fine QB, plenty of QBs aren't even that

Agholor may have been a decoy on that play to free the underneath guy for a 20 yard pickup but you know what....neither of us will ever know so enjoy the completion for a first down.

If that was the goal, I'd think you'd have Agholor just keep running to the other side of the field, not running a corner route back to the same side you're running Smith to.

I don't know...you should get ahold of Josh McDaniel to really know...jk

Personally I think they are being super conservative with the rookie QB in his 2nd start and it's a smart move to teach him how to play in the NFL. Have him master the short game and then extend the field...Belichick did the same thing with Brady even though he had Deep ball Guru D.Bledsoe on the roster. The alternative is to play a rookie qb like the Jets are and that's just a good way to ruin someone.

McDaniels ran the same kind of offense in Brady's last year in NE where the quality of receiving options was not good. Lot of quick releases to short routes with deeper routes being decoys. The entire offense is still learning the rhythm of the cadence and what they can do with guys that are admittedly not the greatest receivers on the planet.

EDIT: FWIW, among wide receivers, PFF rates Agholor #33, Meyers #47, and Bourne #60. None of those guys are going to keep DCs up at night worrying about deep balls.

LOL, a49erfan77 getting more salty by the week in here.

Seriously. Let a young kid grow. Who cares. I'm sure they'll keep this exact same energy for Trey when it's his time. Right? LOL
If history is any teacher, this will end up going the next decade just like Rodgers did. Aaron was in the pro-bowl and posters here were still hitting him with all the reasons they were 100% sure he would fail any minute now.

If any fanbase knew better then to talk smack you would think it would be this one.

A trick play to gain 20 yards? Cmon.

Guy made the wrong read. It happens.

Correct! Let them grow! But the cult of Mac wants to wrap up the draft eval based on a couple games and preseason. Give Trey some time!

But no, that's not how some people work. Sad!
