"But Mac is an old-school gym rat. We caught him a couple nights in the convention center studying tape after midnight, and the important thing is that carried over onto the field. He got on the field, he knew where to go with the ball and, most importantly, he put it where he needed to put it. I think those are the things that are going to make Mac a really good NFL starting quarterback."

Love hearing this. Type of stuff that will separate him at the next level.

I searched for a "shirtless" Mac and wow - shades of Thomas Brady Not sure when that pic was taken though. And from his Wiki this makes you think...

"While he played other sports, his favorite was clear, and from the time he was five years old, his mother would find him drawing out football plays."

This. The NFL is a copycat league. But you have to scout the player himself, not just follow the trend and select based on generalized attributes.

That's how the whole NFL missed on Lamar, Mahomes and Watson. I'd even argue going back farther Wilson, Brees, Steve Young, etc.

Similarly, the NFL loved big body WRs when Andre Johnson, Fitz, Megatron, Julio were tearing it up. Antonio Brown flew under the radar, bucked the trend and became one of the best. Also see RBs trending to smaller, quicker, pass catching and excel-in-space guys... then Derrick Henry beasts defenses.

Yes the game has evolved and we've had some generational talents come in. That doesn't mean the next lookalikes will all be the same. There are still some fundamentals that elite QBs have and Mac Jones has those. Scout the player.

Huh? Every single GM/HC likes QBs that watch film .

you bring up Mahomes/lamer/Watson and are trying to compare it to Jones coming out of college?

what you need to do is have faith that we have the proper coaching staff and roster to take the next Watson/Mahomes or whatever and turn them into a top 5 QB. Also just because someone is top end athlete with great traits doesn't mean he can't go through reads/watch film either.

scout the traits and apply it to your offense and develop.

The draft tracker thread says they only met with Peyton Ramsy. I hope they did their homework on Mac if they pick him.

Maybe they shouldn't if they want him to fall to 12. Plenty of tape, and they can talk to Sabin behind the scenes.

Yeah SF reportedly doesn't have much faith in Saben and his crew in Bama.

We haven't drafted a single Bama player since Foster, and it was because they weren't very truthful about him.

I did not know that. That's not going to serve him well if he wants to get back in the NFL.

I'd still like to fly under the radar on Mac.

Yeah it's part of the reason SF has invested in South Carolina prospects, they had a very open and honest relationship with Will Muschamp and his crew down there...I believe there's an article saying that Bama wasn't very truthful with the Foster stuff and it's rubbed SF the wrong way ever since. Not one drafting bama guy since (did bring in one as a UDFA).

I highly doubt that has any baring on Jones, outside of getting a DUI he's been pretty clean. I think will be tight lipped on all of these QBs (really any player they want). Kinda their M.O.
