Mac Jones, Alabama (6-foot-2½, 217 pounds):Started the final four games of 2019 for an injured Tua Tagovailoa, then went all the way in '20 for the national champions. "They may have had the best offense this year in the history of college football, but Joe Burrow had a great supporting cast, too," said one scout. "He is totally amazing when you break him down. Disciplined person, excellent work ethic, goal-oriented. He has a feel (for the rush). The great ones are not big-time runners. Poised, confident. I think he'll probably go middle of the first."

Completed a record 77.4 percent of his passes in 2020. "He could be the steal of the bunch," said a second scout. "Nobody's saying, 'Hey, he's this guy,' but there are some Tom Brady comparisons." Countered a third scout: "How can anyone compare him to Brady? I wouldn't compare anybody to Tom Brady. Ever. How many guys with similar tools failed? If this guy's the next Brady, trade your next seven first-round picks. Give up your head coach. Trade your owner." His passer rating of 143.1 in 2020 left his career mark at 138.2. "When I watched him, I said this was A.J. McCarron all over again," a fourth scout said. "The offense. The players around him. He's got a slow delivery. He labors in his movements. If he's in rhythm and everything is working for him, he's a machine. I just question everything about his natural talent, his playmaking, his ability to face pressure and make plays."

Practiced at the Senior Bowl but missed the game because of an ankle injury. "Honestly, I wasn't very impressed with him at the Senior Bowl," said a fifth scout. "I just didn't think he stood out at all. He stood out in a bad way. He didn't look very strong. He didn't look very athletic. He just didn't look like a starter you want in the NFL."

Interesting. First time hearing the bolded about Mac. Don't think I've heard anyone say he's had a delivery problem besides his ball not have that consistent velocity.

Also read nothing but good things about his practice performances at the Senior Bowl week.

Definitely someone either looking for him to drop or someone who shouldn't be scouting for a team. I sure hope our scouts aren't that lazy.

Maybe it Is our scouts, and they're looking for him to drop.

I mean I wouldn't say he has a fast delivery or a quick release. I think that's a fair criticism honestly.

As far as the Senior Bowl, I saw some people down there saying he didn't do anything special on the field. s**t ton of save easy check downs for the most part. There was literally nothing else there as far as QBs go. Sounded like everything else was good though (leadership yada yada yada).

Either way he will more than like be a top 15 pick all said in done. IMO he's gonna have to go to the right team to be a top end QB (which can be said for a lot of guys).
Mac Jones delivery and release are both quick.

Its from Bob McGinn, he finds scouts to talk s**t about all of the top prospects. You should see what they said about Fields and Lance.

For sure a dime dropping it in between 2 defenders 25-30 yards down the field. But clean pocket, 2 step drop and WR had separation and beat his man. I've seen Mond make better throws than that, after escaping immediate pressure and with his WR with a defender glued to his hip. It's in the Mond thread too. Don't know what Jack Hammer is talking about with that comment
I don't think I've seen McCorkle make a play/throw like this

sheesh. made a comparison to Jameis Winston for both QBs.
Damn, Mac really is a Mac. Why does he have a permanently-stoned face? lol

It might mean absolutely nothing because Shanny is always evolving and adding new wrinkles to his offense, but one thing that he and his father have always relied on is the rushing attack and PA off of that, and his quotes on how he views QB's for his offense makes me think he'll always take a guy like Ryan/Cousins over an exceptional athlete that basically significantly alters his playbook because of how defenses have to adjust to them, which can be good at times, but it limits his playbook.

"I'll say that we run a lot of bootlegs and things like that. Usually the most success I've had with quarterbacks who can do that are the ones who aren't mobile, because I only want to run bootlegs and stuff if people aren't playing them and when you have a mobile guy, they're playing them. When you don't, they play the run and then you get slow quarterbacks out on the edge and they can throw all day. If there's an extremely athletic, a mobile quarterback who is legitimately mobile, who can make a guy miss in front of him, that takes a very special athlete. Those few guys you have, you need to put in a type of scheme that includes stuff like the zone read and things like that to give them a chance to use all their attributes." - Kyle Shanahan

As I said though, who knows what Kyle is thinking going forward. I legit feel like he regrets passing on some of the recent athletic QB's, and he would've had to clearly make some adjustments to his offense to better utilize these guys, but if there are comparable QB's in this draft at the top of his board, that athletic guy has to have a extremely high ceiling for Kyle to want to change up his offense that has been very successful when health doesn't hinder it.

If Jimmy isn't the guy, Mac Jones just seems like the guy who Kyle will favor over that big arm athlete that plays off script. People forget how much Kyle purposely calls plays that have no chance, all to set the defense up later in the game for a more explosive play. His QB has to be an extension of him and can't play hero ball. This is why it seems to take QB's a little while to explode under him. He has to almost reboot their entire mentality and how they've played in the past, but when they finally get it, wow, it looks special. This is why I truly don't think Jimmy has his trust yet. Injuries aside, he's still in that stage Matt Ryan was in during year 1 in ATL, and be should be further along at this point. Why have Jimmy eating a chunk of your cap when a guy like Jones can function at a suitable level on a much lower contract? Plus he'll have age on his side to grow in this offense as he gets comfortable. I just don't see Fields or Lance being able to start right away without having to greatly alter the offense, so now you're forced to keep Jimmy around for another year or two until they're ready, which is a bad use of your assets and cap space. We're a contender right now and you can't pause your window to develop a raw QB and basically stash your top 12 pick for a year. It's either stick with Jimmy or replace him with someone you're comfortable starting early at some point during the upcoming season. What KC pulled off with Smith/Mahomes is extremely risky, even if they ended up with the best possible outcome. I'll support it though if they feel that strongly about someone like Fields or Lance, or even Mond later in the draft, which I'd rather because we'd still use #12 to upgrade another position. I just don't think they'll go this route though because they haven't shown to be risk takers with their approach to team building.

Good post I think you're on to something.

I find the bolded interesting. That may be reason for passing on Watson and Mahomes.

I was pissed when we passed on Watson. But that quote sheds some light into Shanny's reasoning for it. Whether I agree with it or not doesn't really matter.

I wouldn't draft him based on that outfit.
