He most certainly was not a TO machine in college

He already values the football and that's a trait that a lot of young QB's have to have drilled into them by their coaches. Jones has no problem finding his checkdown or simply throwing it away. It's one of his most impressive traits. This is why I 100% believe his floor is Kirk Cousins/Matt Ryan. I just don't see any bust potential in him and I think he's a guaranteed 10+ year starter in this league. He may never reach being a legit top 10 guy, but he's going to be a QB you can easily win with if you keep a good team around him. That's all this team really needs right now, but on a rookie contract.

This is such an underrated quality. I just watched a bunch of Sam Darnold, and the guy struggles to consistently find his checkdown or take what the defense gives him. Mac Jones does this extremely well. He understands the concept of taking what the defense gives you, playing for the next down, and knowing when to hunt versus man coverage.

Go check every single scouting report on Ryan coming out or find his clips on YouTube. He did not have a bunch of tight window throws. He was a smart QB, but he was questioned by many for his gunslinger mindset, but not having the arm to always get away with those risky tight window throws and it led to a lot of interceptions. Jones imo has better accuracy and similar zip on his throws if you compare him to Ryan coming out, but he protects the ball much better and has a better deep ball because Ryan used to sail a ton of deep passes in college. This was a legit knock on him coming out, but he was still taken high because the game still loved pocket passers back then and he was a heady/accurate QB that just needed to be reigned in a little.
Meh you can find draft profiles saying both things good and bad.
just watched the highlights from that VT game back in 2008, ryan was throwing with plenty of velocity.
one play, which you never want the QB doing, he scrambled and threw it across his body, across the field like 30 yards off his back foot for a TD. Plenty of arm. I was actually surprised to see how athletic ryan was at BC.

I've seen that play plenty of times and yes, Ryan had a great game, but that throw should've been picked off if the defender didn't screw up. He also had a ton of poor throws in that game where guys had to adjust to poorly thrown balls while running open. His arm strength at BC is very similar to Jones, but Mac was more accurate because he had better mechanics, though Ryan cleaned that up quickly in the pros. Very similar prospects though, just 2007 was so long ago and the game has changed a ton since then. If both were in the same draft class, I very much doubt anyone is taking BC Ryan over Jones, neither in 2008 or 2021.

I'm not sure "people" understand that there is a difference in playing hero ball and the QB being able to make a play when it breaks down.

"People " do understand the difference. But you can make a play a multitude of ways when a play breaks down. "Other people " don't love those plays. They are in love with the hero ball plays.
