If you have a little bit of time on your hands, read this article. Very well written with regards to the fit of each QB, sans Lawrence, in the 49ers offense. With that being said, McCorkle Jones did not have very good results as a play action QB. He's a drop back QB through and through. Further evidence that he shouldn't be the pick at 3 because play action is a must as a Shanahan QB.
The counter argument against that:
Jimmy is very good at play-action and boot-action. And yet he is a LIABILITY on this team.
Moreover, I strongly argue that it is easier to learn boot-action techniques than it is to learn pocket passing.
Lastly, McCorkle didn't really get much opportunity to do boot or PA stuff. I imagine with more experience he'd be better at it. And again, it is easier to learn boot/PA than it is to learn how to find the open guy under pressure. PA stuff is EASY in terms of the mental aspect. McCorkle just needs some technique coaching and practice and he'll have it.
