I think we are going Mac.
My preference is Wilson/Lawrence.
If it is between Mac and Fields, who I would like us to draft depends on if Kyle is able to put his pride aside and open up the playbook or allow for more off schedule plays. If we draft Mac it will be because Kyle wants an extension of himself to run HIS offense.
I would hate to see us draft Fields and Kyle put those handcuffs on him. If we draft Fields Kyle NEEDS to let him play his game. To me Fields is at his best when he goes off script.
If we go Fields we have to let him take chances.
If we go Jones we will run the same timing based pass plays we have been running for the past few years.
The bold says it all. Kyle is a HC today because of his play calling. The QB is simply an extension of the amount of work and effort he puts into game planning and play calling. Execute MY gameplan. There's a reason I called that play...often times, to set up another. He's so locked in on control of his offense, it's the C that makes all the protection calls; just one more thing off the QB's plate so he can direct the QB on the sideline.
If he goes the Fields route, there's a very real chance he loses a lot of control of his own offense. And he might be OK with that now.
But remember the comments he made about not wanting RGIII and Kaepernick? Because he'd have to redesign his offense around the QB and not the offense? That if he did that, he'd have to change it for the other 10 players too and that wouldn't be fair?
Here we are. It's 2021. What is Kyle going to do???
I think he does both. I'm impressed enough with all three QB's pocket presence, and all three (including Mac's) athleticism that they all can - to a lesser and greater extent - execute off schedule throws. I think this is how it stands - I think a certain contingent of the 49er brain trust wants Fields (to a lesser extent Lance) and lets label that the John Lynch contingent, the other contingent is the Kyle Shanahan group that wants Mac and his pure pocket passing ability.
I think he does both - in this way. If it's Mac, he'll allow Mac more room to improvise but to a lesser extent than Fields/Lance. I think for Fields/Lance, he'll incorporate (for example) more scramble drills and actually spend a bigger chunk of time on those kinds of back yard football plays than the structured drop back passer plays. He'll just dust off some of Steve Young's scramble drill plays and modernize them for 2021.
