He was a highly touted recruit, and considered a top-ten pocket passing quarterback in the nation according to ESPN, 247Sports and rivals.com.

Phoenix, I don't think this could have been more accurate. Mac Jones on the 49ers seems like it would be similar to Tim Duncan Spurs. I always referred to them as the Borg. Nothing outrageous, but they get s**t done right and make the opponent and all their athleticism feel like idiots.

Mac has plenty of athleticism for the position.

Only he didn't run a 4.62 and his 3-cone and SS are not good at all.

A Georgia native, Fields emerged out of high school as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 2-ranked overall prospect in the 2018 recruiting class. He received a five-star rating and a composite score of 0.9998, which ranks tied for eighth all-time in the ranking's history.

Justin Fields tops list of highest-rated recruits ever for Buckeyes.

Fields was rated as a five-star recruit and was the highest rated dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2018 by ESPN, Rivals.com, and 247Sports.com. ESPN listed him as the top recruit overall, while Rivals and 247Sports ranked him second behind fellow quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The Borg are in Star Trek and that is an Imperial Star Destroyer from Star Wars. Got to match up the right ship with the right universe!

So Panthers decided not to reach for Jones at 8 spot

Darnold still has a lot of ability but needs a change of scenery and a better coaching staff. Perhaps they just thought that getting him for peanuts and drafting a stud WR or possibly Pitts made a lot more sense.

Mac wasn't getting past 3 so they went with the fallback.

Isn't Mac Jones about as athletic as Alex Smith?

I would say it is somewhat similar....you could even say its close if Jones was in an offense that mandated he be in peak shape. Even as out of shape (by NFL standards) as he appears to be, he still measured well.

Alex Smith was absolutely overrated athletically in college. Posters back then thought he was going to come in and be Steve Young or better.

Totally disagree. Ran a faster than average 40 and he had a couple of 300 & 400 yard rush seasons in Kansas City. He definitely was not Steve Young and I don't remember people thinking that. I do remember wishing that he'd run more because I felt he left a lot of yards on the field, particularly before Harbaugh came.

and again, I don't hate the kid. But god damn, at 3?

You could type " I don't hate the kid, but damn in the first round?" and a lot of people would agree with you.

He has a Drew Bree's top of the second round feel to me. Maybe you got him early, but I understand it was a long wait to try and get him in the 3rd.

I think all the Mac Jones resistance comes from not just being a first, but a high first....and not just a high first....but damn traded 3 first to TAKE HIM high in the first.

I hope the dude ends up a franchise QB.....because the fans and media are just waiting to complain. The dude would get Boo'ed in a live draft.
I think he can, depending on where he goes. I just hope he doesn't end up in New England.

It's possible if he goes to the right team.

Seems like the normal starters having to switch field and there's that awkward "do we jog or walk or whatever?" Dont expect allot of people here know what that feels like based on analyzing down moments of a pro day...
If anybody really thinks shanahan is gonna pass up fields for Mac Jones you need to get your head checked. Shanahan clearly stated in his press conference that he wants somebody that is dynamic and can do it all. That's not Mac Jones. That's more Lawrence Wilson fields and lance. I'll put money on the line and say that the niners are not picking Mac Jones. That's how confident how I am

Weird right? And it had NOTHING to do with SF moving up, Breer said this trade was in the works for months

The Panthers/Jets trade may have seemed to have come out of nowhere—but the truth is the teams had been chipping away at it for quite some time. Carolina first broached the topic of a deal for Sam Darnold with the Jets in mid-February, a couple weeks after a very strong bid for Matthew Stafford fell through
