In my opinion, that's exactly what is being done

I don't know that it's what it is, but teams have been known to do this. Wouldn't shock me at all.

Why would the 49ers have to "quietly" learn more about Jones through Harris? They can talk to Jones directly. They are picking #3. There is nothing they need to hide. Harris said the 49ers are still zooming with him to this day. That whole scenario would've only made sense if they were only talking to Harris PRIOR to making the trade. However, there is continued dialogue.

I don't think it has anything to do with gathering intel on Jones. RB is a real position of need. We lost Coleman and McKinnon. Mostert is just like Jimmy G, he gets injured far too often. That leaves Wilson Jr. and Hasty the only other two options. Harris is a perfect fit for this offense. He cuts very well and he is an elite zone scheme RB. Plus his pass catching and pass blocking abilities are the best in this class.

We could have legit interest (2 birds one stone) or we could be feigning it in essence given he may not be within striking distance for us.

And there is definitely information to be learned about a player by talking to his teammates. Talking to a teammate to get intel is nothing new is this process.

"But if coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch had their eyes on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, did they spend way too much for a player who mock drafts had lasting into the teens?

Former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum, now ESPN's front office insider, said the 49ers did it the right way to avoid any heartbreak on draft day.

He said he believes the Carolina Panthers, who own the No. 8 overall pick, were a prime candidate to pounce on Jones if the 49ers left them an opening.

"You're trying to collect as much information as possible, and Carolina loves Mac Jones," Tannenbaum said on 49ers Talk.

"I don't think there's any doubt. I just watched the body language all week of (Panthers coach) Matt Ruhle. I was down there (at the Senior Bowl) broadcasting the game for ESPN. And it was clear that they were falling in love with him. So I think that had to be part of the psyche: 'If we get to five, Carolina might jump us.' So they went as high as they needed to."

Second. When you make a trade like this your instinct is not going to be, Hey guys, first things first, let's go check out the prospect we are least interested in and talk to him. Even though that means we will miss out on watching in person and talking to our favorite prospect. No, your instinct is going to be to go watch and talk to the guy who you fell in love with enough to make the trade to began with.

They met with trubisky first, had a private workout, dinner, etc

This is so dumb. If they love Mac and think he's going to the 49ers. That means Fields and Lance will fall and the Panthers could grab one of them, but they opt out for Sam Darnold?

Oh. Nice point. Much better than my irrational take.

It's the opposite. If I made a trade, then I have a specific target in mind. The first thing I would do is go look at all the other options to make sure I still believe in my original choice.

Not buying it one bit. If you actually sit down and think about the move, it doesn't make any sense in regards to selecting Jones:

Lawrence and Wilson are virtual locks to go 1/2. This has been the case since the day the 49ers made the trade (maybe even prior to it). Everyone knows the remaining suspects looking for QB's: #4 ATL, #7 DET, #8 CAR, #9 DEN and #15 NE.

Detroit is in a rebuild at #7. They have a terrible roster and already have Goff under contract. They likely wouldn't spend future assets to move into the top 5 to pick Jones. Carolina is in a rebuild as well. Very unlikely that they would involve future 1st's (which would be required) to move from #8 into the top 5. Denver at #9 is even less likely. New England at #15 would have to give up even more than the 49ers did to move into the top 5.

Knowing all of what was stated above, we could've just traded up to #6 with Philadelphia. It would've been a safe spot (again, as laid out above) to grab Jones. We all know Philadelphia obviously was looking to move from #6.

It all boils down to this: The 49ers decided to move all the way to #3 for a bigger fish. They leapfrogged Atlanta at #4 to get Fields.
Which trade would you rather make?

Mac Jones: 1st, 1st, 3rd
Sam Darnold: 2nd, 4th and 6th

It is a serious question. Are we sure that Jones is that much of a significant upgrade over Darnold? I'd be willing to concede that Jones is an upgrade (although it is debatable). However, the acquisition cost is flat out eye popping. The move up to #3 has to be for someone like Fields who has tremendous upside.

Before the trade. They needed to be quiet then

Kyle probably thinks that Jones is the next Brady and Peyton. This is how they will sell it to the media during the post-draft presser
