"But if coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch had their eyes on Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, did they spend way too much for a player who mock drafts had lasting into the teens?
Former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum, now ESPN's front office insider, said the 49ers did it the right way to avoid any heartbreak on draft day.
He said he believes the Carolina Panthers, who own the No. 8 overall pick, were a prime candidate to pounce on Jones if the 49ers left them an opening.
"You're trying to collect as much information as possible, and Carolina loves Mac Jones," Tannenbaum said on 49ers Talk.
"I don't think there's any doubt. I just watched the body language all week of (Panthers coach) Matt Ruhle. I was down there (at the Senior Bowl) broadcasting the game for ESPN. And it was clear that they were falling in love with him. So I think that had to be part of the psyche: 'If we get to five, Carolina might jump us.' So they went as high as they needed to."
Not buying it one bit. If you actually sit down and think about the move, it doesn't make any sense in regards to selecting Jones:
Lawrence and Wilson are virtual locks to go 1/2. This has been the case since the day the 49ers made the trade (maybe even prior to it). Everyone knows the remaining suspects looking for QB's: #4 ATL, #7 DET, #8 CAR, #9 DEN and #15 NE.
Detroit is in a rebuild at #7. They have a terrible roster and already have Goff under contract. They likely wouldn't spend future assets to move into the top 5 to pick Jones. Carolina is in a rebuild as well. Very unlikely that they would involve future 1st's (which would be required) to move from #8 into the top 5. Denver at #9 is even less likely. New England at #15 would have to give up even more than the 49ers did to move into the top 5.
Knowing all of what was stated above, we could've just traded up to #6 with Philadelphia. It would've been a safe spot (again, as laid out above) to grab Jones. We all know Philadelphia obviously was looking to move from #6.
It all boils down to this: The 49ers decided to move all the way to #3 for a bigger fish. They leapfrogged Atlanta at #4 to get Fields.
