Yeah that's right, Gase was the reason Sam Darnold turned the ball over like it's going out of style. Gase was the reason he held the ball too long, took too many sacks, made bad reads and so on. Darnold made so many turnovers in college and he had arguably the best team in college football or among the best at the very least. The excuses made for this guy is amazing.

I'm not saying acquiring him for JG. I'm think more of Darnold as a backup.
To add on to my previous post about money, people are complaining that getting Watson would be too expensive for us longterm.

Lets hypothetically say that we get him, and we DONT restructure his contract. From 2022 on, he would be making an average of roughly $38M a season. $38M a season for Watson would be too much, but $35M for Jimmy + Darnold + Rosen would be fine? Yeah miss me with that.

If we bring in Darnold, it will be to start, not to be a backup. The idea that we would be willing to invest $35M in our QB room with a bunch of average QBs is an absurd idea to me. Some may disagree, but I cant get behind that in the slightest bit.

Going back to the original heading on this thread. Darnold is younger, has more upside, is more athletic and is less expensive. The cons are that he doesn't know Kyle's system. His record with the Jets is irrelevant to me since that team is terrible. It has no more meaning than Jimmy's short record with NE.
Seeing people on social media talk about a report that it'll cost a 2nd and a 3rd for Darnold...wtf?

If we are bringing Jimmy back, we need to be all in on him and just pray he doesnt get hurt like he always does. Investing a lot of money in his backup because we arent confident he can stay healthy makes less sense to me than just replacing him.

I agree that spending significant money and draft capital on a backup QB does not make much sense. He will likely be available in free agency next year for a very low price. If you get him this year and he has to play, it seems likely that the season ends in something other than a trip deep into the playoffs, and if he does show something in the process he is just a higher priced free agent at the end of the year. I don't know if paying $10 million is worth the opportunity to find out. The cost is definitely a con.

As for Watson, it isn't really comparable just on $. The value of the players you lose due to trading picks is substantial. In short, I think the overall cost is a con for both players. Watson is so crazy expensive in terms of cash and picks that he better prove to be a Michael Jordan-like figure for it to work, and Darnold's upside next year seems too low to pay $10 million for the right to see if he might be worth spending more money on in the future.

Not sure why the Jets would want Jimmy unless it's as a bridge for the rookie QB they draft? If that's the case why not just stick with Sam

Yeah the only thing that worries me is that Darnold can have a rough 2021 getting to know Shanahan's system. Seems like it takes a year for QBs to master it. Shanahan cant afford another down year. If he wants Darnold to be as prepared as possible, he has to make the trade ASAP so he can fly Darnold over to SF and start the learning now.

if they make this change though, they better use that money on making sure Darnold's jersey clean after every game and that he has one more OW to throw to.

Jimmy would have to agree to it and I don't see any reason he would do so. Go from a superbowl contender (if he can stay healthy) to a rebuilding team for the same money?

Edit: Maybe the Jets guarantee his salary and the 49ers tell him he would be cut. That could be motivation but I think Jimmy might be better off telling both of them to pound sand and go talk to Bellichek if he gets cut.

IMO the whole needs to understand the system thing is a bit overblown. Throwing a slant is throwing a slant. throwing and out route is throwing an out route. Reading coverages doesn't change....Jimmy got thrown into the "system" halfway thru a season and played his best football. Yes there's pre-snap motions and route combinations plus the verbiage. Kyle will call plays that work to his strengths, then build from there.

Tannehill went from a Gase run offense to a similar scheme that we run in Tenn, he balled out (starting as the backup). Not saying Sam does that BUT it wouldn't shock me.

I would MUCH rather draft a QB or try to work something with the Texans. I wouldn't hate the Sam trade (depending on compensation).

if the Panthers trade for Sam, that would be huge for us.

That would still leave about fthree teams possibly looking for a QB (Jets, Falcons, and Lions). Maybe even four if Denver is tired of Lock. Need one more of them to trade for a QB.

If the Panthers brought in Darnold they have a much higher probability of trading out of their pick so another team can grab a QB

Why in the blue f**k would we be sending them an extra pick lol....maybe the other way around.
