Sam Darnold-Traded to Panthers

I didn't click that, but I'm assuming it's the play where Darnold scrambles away and throws a touchdown while on the move against us.

Oui.

Steve Young's 1st two seasons in the NFL (after spending time in sorta pro football USFL) he threw 11 TD's , 21 Int's and a completion percentage of 52.95% in Tampa Bay under Ray Perkins (who?). The 49ers traded a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick and $1 million to the Buccaneers for Young, who's career exploded and ended up with a Hall of Fame career.

Talent + Good coaching + Right scheme fit = success ( I saw that in a QB article I read a while back )

Not saying that Darnold is the next Steve Young, but with the right system and good coaching who knows?

Or he could go on to be the next ex-flavor of the year top QB who never achieves success and bounces from team to team until he retires and nobody notices

Yes. But (pre cap) the team were taking a gamble which was cushioned by the starting qb. And it took Steve a while to win that Super Bowl, even after he was given the starting role. And you are right in your last para. The potential downside of trading for Young was almost insignificant. Trading Garoppolo and bringing in Darnold? Well, you don't need me to list all the busted quarterbacks from 1st round picks. I prefer the Rosen gamble. The upside is probably nearly as high as the Darnold upside but the cost was nothing.

I shall be glad when the draft comes round and some of this qb speculation can be put behind us. Whatever the team do about the starting qb position, at least 20% of the webzone are going to hate it! And whoever they pick in the first, assuming they keep a pick in the first, about the same percentage are going to be convinced that it ranges from a mistake to a total bust.
Good points.
And for every Steve Young and Drew Brees that moves to a new team and succeeds, there are multitudes who flame out.
I had actually thought that Hoyer might be that decent QB bridge until a QB of the future was drafted since he had a little success with Shanahan in Houston.
Don't want! He's just good enough to play two years before you'd want to draft his replacement....He's certainly not the long term solution and would only be a bandaid. I'd much rather trade back 5 or 6 picks and draft Mac.

..Good hurry and get this done .Darnold got some learning to do..IF THIS IS TRUE

so our qb room would be darnold, rosen, Mullens?

That's disgusting.

Most definitely NOT worth it.
I guess the people that want Darnold aren't worried about winning the division which we easily have a chance to do next year with a relatively healthy team and Jimmy Garoppolo starting.

I seriously doubt that. The Rams just got significantly better at the QB position, and unless they have to get rid of a couple of stars, they have the inside track.

Us? Third place would be overachieving.

EDIT - That said, we probably have a better chance with Garoppolo than Darnold. But in this division, a mediocre QB like Jimmy will only lead to success if it comes with an elite defense and run game. We got the run game. Not sure about the defense with these pending FAs.

Too easy to confuse especially against good defenses. Too many picks

If he saw dead people (ghosts) in NY, what would he see in the Bay? Ghouls and goblins?

If he caught mono up in NY what will he catch in Cali?

Look at this gif, it kinda looks like him

Thoughts??

This sticks out...

"Again, it's never as simple as "is player X better than player Z." In this scenario, Darnold's cap number is under $10 million for 2021. That's as of now. After the trade, Darnold's cap number is around $5 million for 2021. Garoppolo's cap number is $26 million. Is there a $21 million difference between the two players? I don't believe so, and I doubt the Niners do, either."
If the 20 million difference is the difference in us making the playoffs and possibly the SB it's well worth it. We all know we are a contender as is with a healthy team

Yeah I know. But I'm saying, in theory, it would be temporary until he's up to speed.

The rams D is overrated and they are going to lose multiple players. We will yet again beat them twice and their OL may give them problems. They have no depth so I guess you're assuming they are going to be almost completely healthy bc a healthy niners squad has the inside track imo.

Seattle has a garbage d and ol. We can beat them with a healthy squad no problem. They also don't have our depth. They have to pay adams so that ought to be fun.

The cardinals secondary will be horrible without Peterson even though baker is good. We also have no problem beating them with a healthy squad. (Remember we lost by only 4 points week 1 without deebo Aiyuk had a practice squad center and a hobbled Kittle for half the game and they blocked a punt for essentially a td so that's an easy win) We whipped them with our 2nd and 3rd string team. They don't have our depth a, have a bad d, bad running game and horrible ol.

so third place would not be overachieving by any means. Maybe for Arizona or the rams but not us if we are even slightly healthier than last year.
