Oui.
Lol. Why don't you show all the other plays in that game. That was in garbage time. Jets got blown out darnold looked like absolute s**t.
I don't think there are too many people who seriously think Darnold is an upgrade over Jimmy. If the argument to trade for him has any merits, it's an argument about potential. But potential means nothing. Nate Davis had more potential than any QB in history. You only trade for "potential" if it's cheap with respect to the distant future and it doesn't risk hurting you in the immediate future either.
That said, I can understand the argument that Darnold + the 14 million or so we'd get by replacing Jimmy with him makes the team better. I'm not sold, but I get the argument.
Not that I'm a fan of Jimmy by any means. He's AT BEST average. But average is better than more INTs than TDs.

For what it's worth I tend to pay very little attention to all these early off-season hot takes that come out every year. Majority of them are usually a bunch of smoke. For arguments sake on this one I'll say this. Jimmy already knows the offense they're trying to install and if they take a new qb then you might as well let Darnold go elsewhere and attempt to get his career back on track. Jimmy would be a great bridge qb for them while a new rookie learns the nuances of the offense.
Whenever we hear the Darnold-to-49ers rumors swirling, the most common refrain is that Darnold is not better than Jimmy G - or at least will not be better than Jimmy G next year when the 49ers Super Bowl window is open. While at face value this point might be true, this line of thinking is myopic, and simply doesn't account for the ramifications of trading for Darnold and letting go of Jimmy G.
Any complete analysis of the hypothetical Darnold for Garoppolo swap needs to account for the cap numbers and assets that would be coming and going. So, let's take a look...
Acquiring Darnold won't be cheap, but it won't cost nearly as much as a QB like Matt Stafford, let alone Deshaun Watson. The Athletic recently proposed a trade where the Jets sent Darnold and the #23 pick for the 49ers #12 Pick and a 2022 2nd Rounder. It may cost a bit more, but let's assume that's the approximate cost to get Darnold.
Now, what can the 49ers get for Jimmy G? Patriots Twitter and beat writers have been hyping the Jimmy G narrative, so could the 49ers net a 3rd Rounder this year and a 3rd rounder next year that becomes a 2nd rounder based on performance incentives?
In this scenario, the 49ers would drop 11 picks in this year's first round, add a 3rd rounder while potentially recouping the 2022 second rounder they sent for Darnold.
We can call this exchange a wash in terms of draft capital, maybe even the 49ers come out a little behind. So why would they do this for a QB who likely wouldn't provide a meaningful improvement over Jimmy G next year? The short answer is cap savings...
Next year, Jimmy G's cap number on the 49ers will be $26.4M. If the 49ers release or trade him, they'll carry a $2.8M hit, resulting in a net gain of $23.6M in cap space.
Sam Darnold's cap number with the Jets next year is $9.8M, BUT over half of that is money that has already been paid to him via his signing bonus. So if the 49ers were to trade for Darnold, his 2021 cap number would be a minute $4.775M, consisting of a base salary of $920K and $3.855M roster bonus.
Moving to Darnold from Garoppolo would net the 49ers $18.825M of cap space in 2021.
What could SF do with the extra $18-19M? They could add a veteran OC to solidify the interior offensive line (Alex Mack). They can add a dynamic young pass rusher (Yannick Ngakoue or Carl Lawson or Leonard Floyd) to compliment Nick Bosa. They can resign Trent Williams, Jason Verrett AND Kyle Juszczyk without batting an eye. And in the draft, the 49ers can add the best players available each round withouto hamstringing themselves trying to fill glaring needs.
Finally, and perhaps most saliently, the 49ers would get themselves a young - Darnold will be 24 years old next year - potentially dynamic QB with a high ceiling who Shanahan can groom.
To me, this isn't about Darnold v. Garoppolo, but rather Darnold + a ton of flexibility in how you build this roster v. Garoppolo and when you think globally, this swap becomes MUCH more attractive.

I would try to get a 3 way deal worked out with New England and the Jets where we trade Jimmy to the Pats, the Jets give us Darnold, and the Pats trade what ever picks to the Jets to get the deal done. Freeing up that money allows us to easily keep T. Williams+Juice+Verett+Hyder, while probably being able to bring in Kinsley or Mack to be our C. Getting a deal like that done, also allows us to draft BPA in the draft, I hope in any order, that our first 3 picks are CB/Edge/IOL. The rest of the draft we can add a WR who can take KR/PR duties, a RB to battle Hasty for the 3rd string job, and maybe another CB or safety.
