I do not want anything to do with Sam Darnold but expecting this to happen

This
Is this really going to happen
I mean what if you can get Sam for say a 4th this yr and a conditional 3rd in 2022, ship Jimmy to NE for a 2nd, and STILL draft a QB at 12?

You basically got your bridge QB for like $4M (save $20M), got a rookie like say Lance to sit and learn, got extra draft capital and still have Darnold to work with? I don't think Sam blows, talent is there. There was no way he was gonna be successful there.

You an apply the 5th yr option (which is only gtd for injury). If he plays decent you can ship him out in a yr and let some team give him an extension. If he sucks you can cut him and you lost out on a couple late 3rd/4th picks. Not the end of the world if you got the kid waiting in the wings and were able to resign your guys.

IF he's awesome, you can resign him to a 2/3yr deal and you still got a stud developing at QB.

The more I think about it, the more I don't think it's really that horrible of a thing. Either scenario you're gonna draft a kid still. you're just getting younger and cheaper...

These would all be better situations than where we are today imo.
I'd give up a 5th or 6th for Darnold. We got Gabbert for a 6th and Darnold really hasn't shown he's any better at this point than Gabbert was when we got him.

The funniest thing in this Sam Darnold rumor is that IIRC part of why the Niners trade for Jimmy was also because Kyle hated the 2018 QB class.^^
If they want Darnold that bad, why they just don´t draft someone this year?

you cant just keep shuffling thru and changing QBs. inconsistency is a big killer in the NFL.

The thing most feared in secret always happens.

But from all the reports, it doesn't look like his cost will be that low. A 4th this year just isn't going to cut it. There's a couple teams out there that he could possibly be an upgrade for and those teams would give up at least a couple of 3rds, if not a 2nd round pick like most reports are suggesting.

If we go that route, we can't treat him as a bridge QB. Would be a mistake to give up a couple 3rds, or a 2nd, just for him to start for a year and then the rookie takes over. Especially if he doesn't look good, then you're screwed.

Imo, it's too much of a risk trading for him. Only way it would be okay if the cost is low, like a 4th and a 5th, which I highly doubt.
Sam Darnold produced the highest uncatchable-pass rate on passes thrown 10 or more yards downfield last season.

If the rumors are true, I'm trying to understand what Shanny's thought process might be. Maybe he sees Darnold and thinks he can teach him to play from the pocket, but the stuff Darnold does outside of the pocket and offscript, which Darnold really good at, can't be taught. I don't know but a day two pick for Darnold is too much. Dude needs so much work.

Darnold is basically the same guy he was coming out of SC, and I didn't think he was very good then.

The only way I see it making sense is if he's super cheap, then he's basically a bridge QB for someone you draft this yr.

save $20M roll with darnold and Lance/fields, then ship Jimmy to the Pats for a 2nd

They can throw the 5th yr option on him, which Is only gtd from injury for 2022...if he sucks you lost out on a day 3 pick or two (and can cut him and save $25M), If he's decent you can trade him in 2022 or let him go and get a comp pick.

if he balls out you can throw a 3 yr deal his way, either way you still have a good young elite QB developing. That's the key, Darnold AND a young rookie.

Reports based off what? What the Jets "want" for Sam? That doesn't mean anything. Philly wanted multiple 1sts for Wentz...how'd that go?

I mean I don't see a single team throwing a 2nd for him, regardless of what they want. More than likely a 3rd or 4th and a conditional pick in 2022 based off playing time/record etc...

I mean has SF not given up mid rd picks for "rental" players in the past? You more than likely regain those picks by trading Jimmy (possibly get more).

I don't think it's likely, I also don't think it's that far fetched... obviously it will be about compensation.
