Sam Darnold-Traded to Panthers

If they want Sam to sit behind Jimmy, that's fine. I can live with that. We'll still be competitive with Jimmy, and Kyle can try to resuscitate Sam Darnold.

But if they plan to send Jimmy packing and start Sam Darnold, well, Jed may as well start firing people because this team will finish in last place next year. And even if Sam Darnold improves and plays well, which I expect he will under Shanahan--all QBs improve under him, the 49ers will be back to square one of having to decide whether to pay a guy who played well in one season.

You don't acquire Darnold to have him sit. It would be a one year tryout to see how he performs in this offense. At the end of the season you have to either keep him at $24+ million, sign him to a long term deal or let him walk.

Phoenix has always been one of the smarter posters on here.

I was looking up Jordan Palmer's QB summit on Instagram and saw Sam Darnold grinding away. At least the dude works his tail off. I guess he's got that going for him, and if he keeps at it, the crappy footwork and mechanics will improve someday...right?

I will say some of the throws this guy makes on the move are pretty nutty. I mean up there with Mahomes and Rodgers nutty.

Another reason why this team would trade for Darnold is the way cheaper contract allowing them to stack the roster more

Actually $18M

I think the most likely scenario, assuming there is any truth to them being interested in Darnold. Is that they are looking for a cheaper backup/bridge QB to pair with a rookie QB they want/intend to draft in the first round.

This is the scenario I'm perfectly fine with. Ideally the compensation they get from trading Jimmy would be equal to what it'd take to get Darnold. Make a move to get Fields or Lance and have them sit behind Darnold for a season. IF Darnold balls out you trade him for a 2nd or possibly more next season and you start the new guy, if he sucks you cut him with minimal expense.

Stick with Jimmy.

I'd rather have Darnold plus the 20 million in cap relief especially if we drafted a rookie in round 1

I'd rather keep Jimmy and draft Jones at #12.

So NY, obviously we have both watched a lot of Darnold and nothing has been good lol but you don't think a great team, system, supporting crew like the niners have can fix Darnold, he wasn't drafted that high just bc, he is talented, I think the jets ruined him so far, you don't think he's fixable ?

I think Jimmy and Sam do a lot of the same things wrong...I think there wasn't a chance in hell that Sam was gonna succeed in NJ, none. Same as if Jimmy was thrown in that situation.

I think he just turned 21 when he started for them? Kid is still a pup and has had zero help or development.

As far as fixing him....I got no idea, his mechanics inside the pocket are pretty bad. He's totally different outside of the pocket and extending plays. That's where he shines from what I've seen.

He needs proper coaching and needs to slow things down. I think he needs to have confidence in his players and play-caller.

I'm in the small minority here but if his confidence isn't totally shot and he's surrounded by elite coaching and talent he can turn his career around. The plays he makes out the pocket and extending plays is very impressive, I'm intrigued by Darnold and the fact he's so much cheaper meaning we can add more talent to the roster

I would rather take a damn wr at 12 than taking damn Jones. Go balls out trade up for either Fields or Lance, take BPA or trade down
