Sam Darnold-Traded to Panthers

Darnold is hot garbage! Call me crazy, but I'd rather take a shot at my least favorite QB from the 2017 draft... Mitchell Trubisky. I think he could work in Shanahan's QB friendly offense. Better arm than any of our current QBs, plus he's not a statue. Thoughts?

I hear you check his stats though, look at his film. There's definitely usable talent there. Especially in a offense that can protect QBs from their flaws.

A lot of my questions about Darnold are based on just how bad Gase has or hasn't managed him.

It's a pretty hard unknown, to me.

Yeah it's not the team around him that makes him be so inaccurate when he has time and it's certainly not the lack of talent that forces him to make horrible decisions and turn the ball over

It's astonishing that even though he may be talented people are actually saying he might be good. The man has more interceptions than touchdowns which is alarming no matter how bad the talent around you is. It's his decision making and he's cost his team so many games bc of his poor decision making and poop accuracy. There are plenty of quarterbacks that have no weapons yet decide to throw less interceptions ( and even fumbles) as much as he did. Just be like Alex Smith and manage the game but don't throw interceptions. It doesn't matter if you don't have many touchdowns you cost your team too many games.

Smith being Smith is what cost him to be traded twice. Todays NFL, you better be more like Favre or gtfo.

I would agree a bit on Smith but you're assuming Darnold has that gunslinger mentality. He may sling it (which he hasn't done except to the other team) but he has to have the production to balance it out at least in tds yards or completions and he does not. Turnovers is the best indicator of a losing team more than a qb that plays like a backup at best
Nope. As pointed out he goes into INT machine mode too much
Still don't want

Not only are his mechanics piss poor, he has durability issues. So we'll probably be interested.

Cons

-Some injury issues
-Odd throwing motion
-Saw ghosts
-Footwork is hit or miss and has gotten him into trouble
-Has struggled thus far in his NFL career

Unsure what to make of Darnold. Talent is there but he was put in a bad position with the Jets, not great coaching, not a lot of talent around him to support him, he's still young enough that he could develop into the star QB he was expected to be or he could continue down the Blaine Gabbert path and forever be a guy that failed to live up to his draft position. The talent, the leadership ability and the athleticism are all there but he hasn't been able to put it together thus far and you wonder just how much of a difference a change of scenery would make for him.

I am skeptical of our QB coaching. It's not like Jimmy's footwork and throwing motion is pretty.

huh? Jimmy has the 2nd best throwing motion in the league after Rodgers. It's short, compact, efficient and lightning-quick--exactly how it's supposed to be.

His footwork is certainly inconsistent.

There are a bunch of QBs that play at a high level in spite of bad footwork and throwing mechanics. The most obvious one is Patrick Mahomes, who has improved his mechanics under Andy Reid. He's still far from perfect, tho. It's a process for all QBs.

It's the job of coaches to coach their players up, and the job of players to seek out help. That's why guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady spent every offseason of his entire NFL career working with a QB coach. Mechanics aren't something that ever stops getting addressed. It's not like a one-time permanent fix. The human body naturally erodes motor patterns over time. The best QBs work on mechanics their entire career.

People need to watch Josh Allen in college to get an example of how drastically mechanics can be improved with some proper coaching.

This!!!! Leaps and bounds better with proper coaching.
