the ol TL logic

Yeah I'd rather have a franchise take big swings to try and become a powerhouse. Missing on QBs happen. Deshaun was a MVP caliber QB before he got exposed or I guess started exposing himself. He was still worth the risk for a team who hasn't ever had a great QB.

let's not defend this move

it was a silly fully gtd contract
for a guy with off the field issues, that merited him losing near his entire first season in CLE
those same issues, create likely problems in the LR and with the fan base
missing as much time as he did creates a massive detraining effect
they didn't just give the contract, they traded out all their ones

it was a known wtf is CLE doing trade, at the time of the trade, reality has only proven it

edit, the bold is good

Indeed. But some would rather excuse paying big money for a bloop single them striking out swinging for the fences.

they didn't swing for the fences, they paid a kings ransom for a lemon, you just call it swinging for the fences,

Absolutely agree.

The Browns absolutely killed their future. This wasn't just going all in on a QB in the draft, they traded for a troubled quarterback with injury issues that had been out of football for a year and not only did they give up a king's ransom for him in draft picks, they gave him such a massive contract that it killed any future flexibility they might have. They can't cut him for at least three years. Not that it would be impractical, but they simply cannot cut him, the dead money hit this year alone would be over $220 million. Next year it would be $200 million, the year after, $140 million, only after 2025 does the dead money hit go under $100 million.

They built a dominant defense that they're going to have to strip apart because they owe Watson over $60 million in each of the next three years. They screwed themselves in a way that perhaps no other team has ever screwed itself, all for a guy that has been mediocre or worse the small amount of time he's actually been playing.

The money is a much bigger issue than the picks. Much like with Russ they are locked in to paying him. That is the issue.

The money is the issue. This is why you don't negotiate contracts from a desperate place. Like the Broncos they should've waited to see what they had in the player before paying him.
He will do fine, rehabbing at the massage parlors

should go down as one of the dumbest transactions in league history, for many reasons

I agree and it's an example of why the NFL needs to stop guaranteed contracts, especially for QBs. They tie up too much cap money in these guys and then they're screwed when they get hurt which so many do.

I wouldn't be against it, but there's should be some cap relief for players that are get injured or missing games bc of off the field issues.

I think these guaranteed contracts along with $40-$50 million dollar salaries are going to be the downfall for a lot of teams. It seems like a quarter or more of the QBs get injured every year and miss significant time. It not only costs the team during the lost year but sometimes they aren't ever the same after the surgeries. The they become a boat anchor for the franchise. They're stuck paying them and can't trade them if they aren't performing well. I can see guaranteeing them for maybe 2 yers but anything beyond that shouldn't be guaranteed.

They will need to rethink the whole cap structure. Some players will sign these contracts that don't love the game and then all of a sudden those players may not want to play all 17 games. Like the NBA which now has to manage player "load times" bc players just dont want to play all the time.
