Plus the broncos were highly rated on defense that year too, iirc.

The 49ers were not prepared, both on offense and defense. The Ravens wanted it more. You saw that look in their eyes. I felt like the 49ers were happy to be there.

Ravens had the better Harbaugh head coach. Simple as that.

I wouldn't say that. We had a gimmick QB who would get exposed before the next year was over and were 4 yards away from SB victory. Flacco wasn't great but he was a much better QB and you are going against all time greats in Lewis and Reed.

Jim won at .695 clip
John at .609

both great. Jim never had a great QB. John had a SB MVP and a NFL MVP at QB. It's a great coaching family.

What ?? He played great and was elite during their super bowl winning post season run... He had 3 tds against us in the first half.....

Yeah Flacco was oddly great that post season.. no doubt about it.. was speaking on Jim vs. John.. John of course had the career of Flacco, I wouldn't say he had a great career... I mean winning a SB and SB MVP is great.. don't get me wrong.. but he wasn't what I would call a great QB year in and out..

Still he and Lamar are better than Alex and CK.. the Jim QBs..

Ryans.. I see him as a future HC..

Yeah, that was one of the best postseason runs by a QB. Also, Lewis and Reed were on their last legs. The best they had to offer at that point was their football knowledge. Niners had the better roster overall. If Aldon and Justin were 100% we take that game easy. Kap was having a remarkable postseason himself so it's not like he was just along for the ride.

We just made the dumb mistakes that ultimately cost us. First play being called back for illegal formation that would've netted a big play (after two weeks to prepare )

LeMichael fumble in red zone

Kap INT in which Moss just gave up

kick return for a TD (aided by holding)

Culliver falling on his ass on a deep throw

Harbaugh a TO on a play that could've been the game winning TD

calling 3 straight pass plays to a concussed Crabs (no holding calls def helped)

goddamn getting pissed again

Yeah. I want no part of Fangio after what happened In the super bowl.

Hard to not be focused when you have HOFs like Ed Reed and Ray Lewis knowing it was their last chance at SB. Niners on the other hand thought it was just the beginning.

IIRC weren't some of the players out clubbing the night before.

Being out isn't a problem, though personally I wouldn't. Between the Smith Brothers injury, the slow start, not handing the ball to Gore, or even Kap running himself all did the team in- not going out before the SB.

That's a big problem. That tells you their head wasn't in the right place. They were there to handle business. They could've partied all they wanted after getting the Lombardi. I'm sure Reed and Lewis weren't letting there guys be out clubbing before the biggest game.

I remember reading about Rice getting into a heated argument with Deion about this very same issue before the Chargers SB. They were so confident that they felt they could just walk in and win. Rice wasn't about that and set him straight.

Since Ryans has been named DC, the 49ers have drafted Ambry Thomas on day 2 (man CB), signed CWard (man CB). There was talk in the 2021 offseason about the CBs playing with more aggression at the line.
Then the revolving door at CB happened (injuries), and Ryans had to adjust accordingly. The 2021 defense behaved a lot like the Saleh defense in that it was very zone dominant. In that sense, we didn't see the aggression at the line of scrimmage that was talked about during that offseason.

(pay to read, but the article's preview has interesting stats)
https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-demeco-ryan-scheme-has-san-francisco-49ers-defense-playing-at-high-level-without-high-level-cbs-seth-galina-feature
With Emmanuel Moseley and Ambry Thomas on the outside, the 49ers cannot play man coverage. The 49ers utilized Cover 1 on only 18.7% of the team's defensive snaps during the regular season (22nd) and just 14.7% during the playoffs.
The 49ers didn't use man coverage a ton even under former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, but it has come to a screeching halt over the back half of this season (2021). San Francisco cannot just "man up" receiving threats and let its pass rush go to work.
-------
Another offseason has passed and the 49ers went out and got a proven player to help evolve Ryans' scheme in CWard. Let's see if the 2021 talk about being more aggressive with man coverage becomes reality.

Showed up big time versus the Rams. They couldn't do anything to stop OBJ. You can bet Eman and Ambry will have big targets on their backs. Not to mention that we have no clue on who will man the clot CB position. Wish we had a healthy JV to go with Ward

This might be his last year here, I look forward to seeing how the defense performs.

Yeah I saw the video.

Deion told Rice "Listen, we're gonna win this game by at least 20...."

I read that Bills always partied hard. One of the local WTF players here in DC said he ran into Thurman Thomas and Kelly the night before they played in the SB and they both were hammered and heading to another party.

And you know there are examples to the contrary. Its only a problem when you lose. We had a track record of slow starts in the Harbaugh era and the defense played terrible all during the final 5 or 6 games of the season. To attribute those trends to going out before is simple.

And with that Chargers example do you think they lost because they went out?

The Bills weren't beating the Cowboys (I'm sure they were real choir boys during Super Bowl week) nor that criminally underrated Washington team.
