A lot will depend on health and the roster

I can see a temporary drop off as Demeco gets used to being a DC, but the fact that he's surrounded by former DC's - I think - will be very brief as he'll have plenty of help getting him up to speed.

Yep. Gonna be some adjustments. He's gonna have to get into his own groove and figure things out on the fly which might cause some issues. Hopefully he's a fast learner and his staff should help him greatly.

I hope we run more A gap blitzes. I loved the slot CB blitzes with Williams this year. They were pretty effective.

Agree. I do hope he is a fast learner. I'm hoping he's been preparing for this job since he retired from the NFL.

Agree on the Blitzes, I like the more aggressive approach because sitting back and getting killed on 3rd downs because the two midgets took off and ran, was frustrating. I'd rather take my chances and ether win big, or lose big, and not be in a position of just keeping on losing 3rd downs.
how many draft picks do we get from him if he leaves us
What I anticipated.

man, you know those LBs love them blitzing type of D so I feel that Ambry's man coverage skill will help...

plus, this kid is a gamer..

It's definitely a sign. The 49ers added James Bettcher whose defenses (ARI) ranked top 10 in blitz rate when he was a DC. Demeco Ryans is running the show, but you don't bring in Bettcher unless you are open to increasing blitz percentage.
-----
"Lives and dies by the blitz," said one personnel executive familiar with Bettcher's defenses. "You need to have good personnel, especially in the back end."

We don't know all the tweaks Ryans has in store. It may still be zone dominant, just with more elements of man and/or blitzes compared to 2020.

I kind of figured we'd move to more man with more exotic blitz packages.

So that means we might see more hybrid SS/LB's like Marcell Harris. Guys like Ward, Warner, Harris, Moore, Tartt, etc. blitzing.

I like how Saleh contained Wilson last year. Blitzing heavy from one side and funneling him into Ends that simply set the edge and waited for him.

We added more interior pass rushers too and depth.

I wonder what he'll do with AA...move him permanently inside and keep the speedsters at end every down now at W9? Or AA back on base downs? 2i and 3T will be attacking positions now.

This is how I feel. I don't foresee a wholesale change to the defensive scheme but more tweaks coming. I have 5 safeties on my current 53. As I said in that thread there has to be a reason the niners have been sniffing around the safety market so much this off-season and drafted another one. More dime packages? More hybrid linebacker/safety looks? Then to your point you bring in a blitz specialist and a guy who loves man coverage as one of Ryans' right hand men. I think all of the above is possible and a definite sign that more tweaks are coming.

Also if more man coverage is on the deck then Verrett staying healthy is critical this year as he's not only our best corner but he's also equally as good in man as he is zone.

Exactly. Ryans is going up against them. Lance will be sitting.

If what everyone says about Ryans is true, you're likely looking at the next guy from the Shanahan tree to become a HC.
I'm not liking this Cover 2 talk that it seems like we will be running. Still have nightmares from Brett Favre destroying our Cover 2 with his TEs back in the late 90's.

What Cover2 talk? Did Ryans say something? I haven't heard Ryans say anything about scheme all offseason.

They were talking about it on KNBR or one of the local podcasts or whatever about using more C2 looks and that they didn't run C3 as much as we think. That's just what was said but I can't confirm if that's what they actually did on the field.
