We only have problems with mobile strong armed QBs.
Honestly I partly blame Jimmy because the defense does not know how to react after the play is extended. Probably from lack of practice.
They basically lose track of what to do once the plays start to breakdown.
Without good pass rush our secondary can be exploited. Lenoir and hufanga can be picked on without decent pass rush.
Ryan's has had a lot of blown coverages to start games. It was like this against Miami as well. Tua just missed a lot of blown coverages.
He seems to figure it out in the second half and tighten up the defense.

damn shame
Wouldn't have been fair for anyone to play a 49ers defense with two CB1s so the voodoo football gods had to take one away

Don't need my briiant mind for it. Bill Buckner could do a better job than Ryans did today.
Sure guy.

Let the other teams best player beat you? The only real player they even have. Terrible.
Shannahan should have told him to fix that s**t at half time.
They need to do something with the secondary. An elite QB like Rogers will torch them for 500 yards 40+ points.
I know. It sucked when he did that last year in the playoffs.
And when Brady did it earlier this year it was embarassing.
LOL.
I think the biggest fear I have for our defense are offenses that can run the ball, have a QB with mobility and can challenge the defense all over the field with his arms and legs, and a playcaller that can call a balanced gameplan.
There aren't a lot of offenses in the league like that, but our struggles against the Falcons, Chiefs, and Raiders are not surprising to me. We struggled against the Falcons because they were able to run the ball well traditionally, and then Mariota made it difficult with read options and his scrambling ability. We struggled against the Chiefs because they were just able to mix it up and keep our defense off-balance all game. Throw in Mahomes doing Mahomes stuff, our defense got frustrated and the game got away from them.
Against the Raiders today... Jacobs is a top NFL RB in the league today, and then Davante Adams is Davante Adams. If we try to allocate resources to stop one player, it opens up other players, and Josh McDaniel was mixing it up fairly well today.
I think we'll bounce back, but yeah... we need to get it together. The Vikings and Cowboys have strong offenses, and Jalen Hurts is the match-up nightmare from the Eagles. The Packers might not seem as scary at first, but they're a team that can run the ball well with their runningbacks. And if we make it to the Super Bowl... there's some really scary QB-driven offenses coming out of the AFC.

During the regular season, the defense didn't practice against Jimmy once Trey Lance got injured. They play the QB2, which for most of the season, was Brock Purdy.

Unfortunately this defense isn't good enough to win it all. Simply overrated.
I looked back at their schedule and the offenses they've played have either been a joke or not at full strength. theyve been very lucky with their schedule. When they did play a good offense (Chiefs, raiders) they've gotten blasted. Chargers were down 2 recievers. Dolphins were, and still in, a slump. Who else have they played with a high powered offense? The saints? Colt McCoy? Yeesh.
This is two weeks in a row the dedense has looked suspect. I'm not happy going into the playoffs the way this defense is looking.

Coordinator OTY?
No one ever claimed he could invent cover corners.

Definitely have my doubts about this #1 defense, but I can't let this slide.
Dolphins were on a 3-4 game winning streak and was the hottest, if not the hottest team coming into Levis not being the 49ers. Tua had the highest QBR of all qbs in the league at the time. Their offense was a threat with all their speed. 8-4 with a Genius Coach coming into Levis with a hot streak.
49ers broke them, we started their 5 game losing streak.

They practiced against only Lance all off season.

I'm guessing we dropped pretty far down.

Nope. Still #1.
#1 SF - 16.5 PPG (16 games)

The secondary was way worse last season and yet look at what DeMeco did in the POs.

The defensive line produced a couple of big plays but couldn't produce consistent pressure on the QB. That's not going to cut it. Ryan's needs to make sure that job one is visible impactful pressure on the quarterback even if he has to drop one or two from coverage.
A lot of times I see movement and discussion among the back seven right up to the snap. So I'm wondering if people are dropping assignments or not reading the formation right.

Prevailing sentiment in the 49ers' locker room: This game was like their 2019 epic win at New Orleans, in that the defense didn't have its usual juice but the offense rose to the occasion in very clutch fashion
