As long as it's smart and well-timed, I'm for it. No BS prevent defense at the end of games letting off the gas, allowing teams to come back.

Hopefully Ryans can find a good balance.

I think Fred Warner and Tartt could be excellent in a blitz packages

Looking for good things from Ryans - a lot more blitzing will be welcomed.
Shanahan with the kill shot. LOL

From the homepage article.

"I think you'll see DeMeco's personality come out a little bit more," Shanahan told Tim Kawakami of The Athletic during an interview on the most recent episode of Kawakami's TK Show. "DeMeco's an aggressive guy. I always messed with Saleh because I said I don't think he's ever lost a dollar in his life gambling because Saleh doesn't want to gamble too much. I think DeMeco will do that a little bit more. Sometimes there's a little risk in that but sometimes there's some reward also. We'll see how he finds his way with that. It takes time though. But I don't think it's going to take DeMeco too long."
K'Wuan with 4+ sacks on the season, just wait

I could see them testing Hufanga in that Jamal Adams role during preseason also
I always thought Saleh was to passive with blitzing so I'm not mad at this news at all.

I hope that's not the burnt toast in coverage role.

Prevent defenses were a good strategy in the old days before they changed the rules and made it easier to pass. Most offenses were built around the run and the passing game wasn't as sophisticated. If you had a 2 score lead you could protect against the bomb and force them to eat the clock with running plays mixed with some short passes. Now teams can score quickly with a long pass or a short pass with a lot of YAC. It's not uncommon to see the lead change 2 or even 3 times in the last few minutes.

Worked out pretty well I'd say. Was one of the top DCs in the league leading one of the top defenses in the league and parlayed that into being one of the hottest HC commodities in the league

Yeah, I'm personally not a fan of too many manufacturerd pressures. But I'm a big fan of exotic blitzes. We've got our own QB's killed against those kinds of teams, win or lose. But this is about what Kyle wants so it should be fun to see the other QB's under heat whether from standard, manufactured or exotic pressures.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
2020 Defensive Pass Efficiency Rank: 9
2020 Defensive Rush Efficiency Rank: 5
2020 Base Coverage: Cover 3 and quarters
2020 Third-Down Mentality: Blitz and play Cover 1

DeMeco Ryans takes over for Robert Saleh as the 49ers' defensive coordinator for 2021. Ryans worked under Saleh, so we can expect the defense to stay relatively stable. The 49ers played one of the highest rate of quarters coverages on early downs to go along with basing out of Cover 3. They have a low blitz rate on early downs but then turn up the pressure on passing downs. San Francisco ranked 19th in early-down blitz rate and third on third down last year. Overall, the unit ranked in the top 10 on early downs and third downs in EPA allowed per play.

The bolded underlined really showed up on film and I'm glad PFF was able to kinda quantify it. Not sure how much of that is because they lost Bosa/Ford early or if that was the plan coming into 2020. We'll see how accurate this PFF breakdown is since I doubt anyone outside of 49er HQ knows what Ryans will be doing specifically.

I wonder just how much of that was due to the "disasteroma" on our DL. We had guys starting that had been either on PS only or had been bagging groceries somewhere, Walmart, maybe. At one point didn't we have 6 DLs out with injury. They came back but some played injured. Could the 3rd down blitzes have been due to our DL being unable to put any kind of pressure on the opposing QB?
I never want to see that f**king prevent on 3rd & 15 where we have all our secondary waiting at the sticks to allow the inevitable 14 yard gain and opponent makes an easy 4th & 1 decision
