SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
2020 Defensive Pass Efficiency Rank: 9
2020 Defensive Rush Efficiency Rank: 5
2020 Base Coverage: Cover 3 and quarters
2020 Third-Down Mentality: Blitz and play Cover 1

DeMeco Ryans takes over for Robert Saleh as the 49ers' defensive coordinator for 2021. Ryans worked under Saleh, so we can expect the defense to stay relatively stable. The 49ers played one of the highest rate of quarters coverages on early downs to go along with basing out of Cover 3. They have a low blitz rate on early downs but then turn up the pressure on passing downs. San Francisco ranked 19th in early-down blitz rate and third on third down last year. Overall, the unit ranked in the top 10 on early downs and third downs in EPA allowed per play.

The bolded underlined really showed up on film and I'm glad PFF was able to kinda quantify it. Not sure how much of that is because they lost Bosa/Ford early or if that was the plan coming into 2020. We'll see how accurate this PFF breakdown is since I doubt anyone outside of 49er HQ knows what Ryans will be doing specifically.

Great stuff. There was definitely a massive need to manufacture pressure with Bosa (and Buckner) gone. So this adds up.

The question will be if Ryans attacks on early downs.

I loved Saleh but I have to admit that was one thing I HATED WITH A PASSION. It filled me with uncontrollable rage when we did that, and I'd explode even worse when we would still manage to give up the first down or commit a penalty to give them a fresh set.. I'm getting worked up just thinking about it lol

Makes me wonder if DR is talking about more blitzing b/c he realizes ER might not be a strong point right now. I think he blitzes more on 1st downs
MECO best be ready for prime time !!!!

Moar A gap pressures please

Saleh actually used a ton of A gap pressure last year with Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. He mugged the hell out of the A gaps with both stack LBs on what seemed like every 3rd down. I want to see Demeco keep that element in the defense. That's good use of your athletic LBs because even if they don't blitz, they're athletic enough to potentially create confusion for the OL and then drop back to their spot.

Fred Warner youtube video highlights that exact point

Intelligent blitzing ... ala Todd Bowles like schemes.

You don't have to do it every play - just mix it in.
With so much emphasis of the defense running through the DL (and pass rush, by default), I'm very curious how he views AA at end and our depth at ER.

I keep bringing up the James Bettcher hire because you don't hire a guy like that unless you want some intricate pressure schemes. These two write ups are a nice read and ties in what Bettcher may be adding. It's nothing the 49ers didn't do in the past few seasons, or that other teams don't do, just perhaps more methods of doing it.

This write up describes "creeper" pressures. TLDR: It's a four man rush disguised to look like a blitz by dropping a typical pass rusher into coverage and bringing a coverage player on the pass rush.

Here's Bettcher doing it in ARI.

"The first stark difference that Bettcher will bring to the table is the position from which his rushers originate. Just a reminder: the Cardinals last year blitzed DBs at a rate 6th highest in the league."

Check the final play of this clip @0:33 (Bettcher ARI defense): [blocked URL]
SEA calls All Curls, thinking they are about to see Cover3 so the four curls will stretch one of the four underneath zone defenders. Instead, it's Cover2 (5 underneath zone defenders) no one is stretched, and a RB is forced to stay in for blitz pickup, but it's not a blitz it's still a four man rush - only four routes are run. This was a pure win on the playcall. Rookie Saleh had Jason Tarver as the former DC to lean on, Ryans has Bettcher.
