There is smart and there is prudent.

Smart is staying with Kyle, prudent is *show me the money*

On average, an NFL offensive coordinator will be in the $1 million range in terms of his salary. The first coordinator to break the million-dollar barrier for an annual salary was then-Redskins coordinator Marvin Lewis in 2002.

A young man who wants to move up the ladder and who is both prudent AND smart, will// should do all he can to learn ALL he can in the OCing business. And if he is ultimately looking for a HC job down the line, then the #1 thing he can do to improve his chances of succeeding is to follow HC BW example.

By the time GOAT HC BW finally became HC, he had coached every position on the field, was versed in talent evaluation, how to build a team, how to draft, who to re-sign and who not, who and when to FA, plus he had a sharp eye for the folks he worked for…GM and owner, to name a few. That is rare in the coaching world today, and is why so many new HCs fail.

Like other things in life, the more one knows about his job, the more likely one is to succeed. I think McD stays around awhile longer. Nonetheless, it is nice to be considered, and the more interviewing one does, the better he gets at it. And then one day with luck, the magic job comes up.

There is also learning through failure. You don't gain head coaching experience just by being an OC. Mike Shanahan learned a lot about defense and head coaching through his two years with Al Davis early in his career as a head coach. Got to go and fail to succeed. Unfortunately, a lot of youngsters (and many adults) have been dissuaded from that route by woke teachers who can't stand failure. Failure is just the opposite side of the coin of success. If I was McDaniel, I'd jump at the opportunity to fail by being a HC for a bottom feeding organization. Scancarello took a chance, failed, and now he's back with Shanahan, much wiser and probably more knowledgeable too. Trey's development has been breathtaking - and benefitted probably from Scancarello's failures with the Broncos.

Not every person is built to be a HC and lead a team, I think Mike is a super smart football mind. I do not think he's built to be a head coach and lead a locker room of 90 dudes and deal with everything else that comes with that.

some coaches are just good coordinators, same thing as coach K here. He knows what he is and loves being a DL coach. He's paid very very well to do that as well.

You never know with some folks. Some take some time to gain confidence in themselves in a leadership position. Sometimes, he has to see leadership to be a leader. Fangio was in some ways a disaster as a HC, but in other ways, he's gained experience as a HC that might help him be a better HC or DCoordinator in the future. I hope we keep Kocureck here for a looooong time, but somebody shows him the money, even he will leave. I don't think you can become a good head coach, without first being a bad head coach. Got to go through the struggles and learning curves just like Kyle and every other coach (and or person does) in their new job or task. How fast and how far you go depends on talent after that.

Watching some of his clips I am confident that he will impress in his interviews.
So you're telling me weay lose both coordinators

I wouldn't go to Miami if i was McDaniel. You don't get to pick the QB and have to deal with a long time GM with limited success.

I'm pretty sure what he was teaching those QB's were Football 101 fundamentals on going through your progressions... but it's pretty amazing the level of detail NFL players get coached up on and then have to read/react in about a second. To the point that a QB does one step, and then makes the decision to throw or move to his next read.

But if not this year, maybe next. Specially if the 49ers just keep winning. I know it's basically the same for other teams, but I just get the feeling that our front office is targeted more for talent raiding than other teams because of Kyle's success as a OC and HC. Fair or unfair, it's annoying to me.

I think it's Daboll's job if he wants it...he's worked with Tua in Bama and he's worked with Grier when he was in Miami as the OC.

I hope Flores goes to the Vikings (so we keep Ryans) and The NYG are left with their pants around their ankles haha.

If I'm the Vikings I do everything possible to get Flores. Their offense has top end players on it to keep points on the board so attracting a good OC shouldn't be an issue. Flores is a guy that could get that defense back on track to respectability.

Surprised the deadspins attempt to discredit him as a candidate because they thought he was just another white guy before they were called out and forced to retract their article hasn't gotten much coverage here.
