We've seen Shanahan switch DCs without a problem.

We've never seen him without McDaniel. He was there in Houston, Washington, Cleveland, Atlanta and now the 49ers. He's been Shanahan's right hand guy for over a decade. I think people might be slightly underestimating the potential loss if he goes elsewhere.

I think Scangarello can do a good job subbing in for McDaniel, also Kyle is pretty well known now as a offensive wizard, he can probably pick the best of the college coaching litter if he wants. Holmgren was just a BYU QB coach and Walsh brought him to the 49ers.

He probably can, but I don't want to. As for Holmgren being "just" a BYU QB coach, that was a pretty big deal in the 80s given who they had throwing the ball as well as their passing offense. Hoping we can win just one damn Super Bowl before the vultures really start to raid us lol.

I hope so. Several here have commented on him being half african american.

Does that mean the Niners only get one third rounder instead of two?

lmao

He's like Kittle if Kittle was unathletic, tiny and a try hard.

McDaniel plays a huge role in the run game for this team, which is the bread and butter of this offense.

Agree, but Kyle's no slouch either. I think they've thought it through. Butch Barry and Zach yentser can probably chime in on the run game (they are Foerster's OLine assistants) while Scangarello does the passing. I also have a feeling Kyle might do a Holmgren and pick up a talented college coach to plug into the hole that McDaniel would leave behind if he leaves.

Its a given you are going to lose good coaches. Holmgren and Mike Shanahan are prime examples. Kyle just has to keep loading up. Seifert never could do that. Example Marc Trestman.

Having said that, I'm also glad Kyles not afraid to upgrade the coaching- Kocurek for Zigonina. If his coach that potentially replaces McDaniel isn't up to Kyle's standards, he'll be let go like Zigonina.

I hope not! We need every third rounder we can get! But i would think if he qualifies as a minority coach, we should get the full compensation.

I think he's funny but can't see him representing a franchise.

That is an interesting question, however, the answer has to be the same as Saleh. It would be an absolute muck fest if the league was requiring a genealogy for every coach that is interviewed to meet the Rooney Rule or qualify comp picks.

I disagree. Seifert went from Holmgren to Mike Shanahan and the offense evolved. He just couldn't do it a second time. He also went from Bill McPherson, to Ray Rhodes, to Pete Carroll. Those defenses got better as his tenure went on. We just couldn't survive the loss of Shanahan AND Ricky Watters. I think if we had Watters, the Trestman tenure would've went far better. Or we could've promoted Gary Kubiak, but I think he had strong ties to that Denver organization.

Kyle is no slouch but this is where fans likely underestimate McDaniel and his contributions. Kyle has an entire team to oversee and manage, while Mike has far more time to focus how to attack the next opponent in the run game.

Mike has earned Kyle's trust and respect. Any other coach put into that spot will be looking to earn that trust and respect but until then it may put more on Kyle's plate and we don't want him stretched too thin. Also possible the run game suffers a little until new guy gets up to snuff.

Losing Mike may hurt more than some may realize, at least early on. There is valid reason to have a little concern about it.

Agreed. I am curious as to who the rising stars are on the staff in terms of other position coaches and even offensive and defensive assistants. We definitely have to get ready to lose guys for the next couple of years.

If you are going to be a head coach. BE a good Head Coach. That means being good on *both sides* of the ball. If Tom Landry, Don Shula, and Bill Bellichik can coach the offensive side despite starting on the defensive side of the ball then Seifert was a bad hire. Plain and simple.
